Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ryan Isabell . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ryan , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
As a business owner, everyday is a risk. That’s actually part of the definition of an entrepreneur. “The one who takes the greater risk.” I literally dove head first into an industry that doesn’t have the best track record for people without a huge name or platform. Here I am, some regular guy, with about 400 followers on Instagram, thinking about starting a clothing brand. You want to talk about risk. I had 1 shirt idea, no capital, and no following. I constantly had to put myself out there and make people see in me, the same thing I see in myself. That right there is no easy task at first. It’s definitely not easy to approach someone with a brand that they have never heard of, in an attempt to convince them that your Clothing Brand is better than what they have on. Needless to say, I never gave up. I kept taking the necessary risk, and eventually I won.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
The Accepted Outsider Brand LLC is a Clothing and Apparel Brand. We promote a high level of confidence and individuality. Not just being the original you, but the BEST YOU. We don’t follow fads, we set trends. Every T-shirt design is either fresh from my mind or my wife’s. Now we’ve branched out into sneakers. Soon we will have a different shoe to match every shirt we create.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Capital???? When I had the idea to start The Accepted Outsider Brand LLC, I had no clue what I was doing. All I had was a phrase that said “Wake Up Pray Attack the Day Repeat. The funny story is that I got rear ended in 2016. The accident did virtually no damage to my car and with no shame I took the check that the insurance company sent, and bought 100 wristbands and 20 shirts. From there, I made everything work out in my favor.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
When you start a business, the first thing you expect is for everyone you know to support everything you do. That is never the case. Just because they love you doesn’t mean they love what you do. So you have to find a way to create things that everybody loves. That’s how you win.
