We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ryan Healey. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ryan below.
Ryan, appreciate you joining us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I tend to hide my individuality behind my brand (Hemp Films), foregoing personal notoriety for a larger brand awareness. Therein, I try to portray and represent my clients (many of whom have become friends) and their brands by using my skills to bring their incipient ideas into reality. Because of this, I hope my legacy is one that fosters progressive creatives, and provides an outlet for artists and musicians to enrich the world and continue to more deeply connect people to the human experience.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was always one of those kids that wanted to make movies and tell stories. I convinced my parents to buy me a Hi-8 camcorder when I was 13 or so, and my friends and I immediately began making our own comedy shorts and action movies. In high school, I took two years of a graphics and arts class taught by Mr. Hemp, furthering my editing and graphic design skills. Magnanimously, we coined the name “Hemp Films”, and thus, in 2003, Hemp Films was born in a time when phones had cords, cameras used tapes, computer monitors were giant tubes, and high definition video just meant a bigger screen. After years of being unable to find a fulfilling job in the industry, I decided to just create my own, gathering clients from various local music scenes, word-of-mouth, and persistence. To date, Hemp Films has made over 50 music videos, preserved live music sets, created a concert series, helped clients with their Kickstarters, and have had tons of fun along the way.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Definitely just being easy to work with and delivering a polished product in a timely fashion. I think a combination of attitude and professionalism have really helped garner a name for myself.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I don’t like feeling that I’m wasting time or being bored, and shooting and editing creative video never makes me feel that way. My driving force has always been self-fulfillment, and I’ve been lucky enough that some people want to pay me to do something I love. I’m happy. They’re happy. Everyone wins.
