We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ryan Feeney. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ryan below.
Ryan , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I am much happier as a business owner. Creating an environment to watch people thrive is something myself and the rest of our staff takes pleasure in.
Having a real job is all relative. As a business owner you have all the responsibilities of having a regular job just no separation from work when you go home. The lifestyle associated with running a small business is more of an issue for other people in my life and its work to keep up with living a well rounded life.
The conclusion to my thought process in running a small business is , its an unwinnable endeavor. It is the process in which I enjoy which lines up perfectly for me. Each day has new challenges if you are doing things right. If you have a cycle of the issues coming up you are not doing somethings right.

Ryan , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
ASD Fit is a leader in adaptive fitness. We work in the exercise and wellness field with clients with disabilities. Weekly we service over 400 individuals with Autism, Down Syndrome, TBI, CP, Rare Genetic Disorders, and behavioral needs. This is a population often in bad physical shape, with low fitness levels creating secondary health concerns while they age.
We have built a community of athletes trying to better themselves and their situations. We lift weights, we run, we jump, we train like any other person would. We hold our clients to a high standard and balance the line between friend , motivator, and trainer. Our approach of not overthinking things has led to great success from clients in our community. I am most proud of the friendships and memories made in our gym and programs.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
What Capital? ASD Fit was a solo idea with one client. I was anticipating being able to get groups going but was initially met with only “no’s” and people not understanding the service provided. Eventually one client be came two and I slowly started to add clients driving door to door with some basic workout equipment. Cash from the first session became the gas money to get to the next set of sessions. The service started to expand. Driving from door to door was no longer an option. I got my first break when I was able to sublease gym space during odd hours at a local studio gym. What seemed like a risk at the time was short lived. We out grow that space in the process began to add staff. A few great additions later and we have out grown out current space.
The capital is the people. We never raised funds to get off the ground. We created a team of like minded, great staff. That is more valuable than money.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
ASD Fit has built a great reputation by treating the people we work with with dignity. Truly making a long lasting impact on our clients is something all our staff prides themselves on. In the human resource and special needs fields there is a misconception the clients need to have less expected of them so they do not fail. We push our clients at whatever level we meet them at to raise them up and build their independence. We want all the individuals and families we work with to experience a full life. A diagnosis does not to the story of who we work with. In all our clients I would say whatever diagnosis they have is the least interesting thing about them. We work with aunts, artists, bikers, fishermen, video game players, sons, daughters, brothers, and sisters. They just happen to have a cognitive disability.
