We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ryan Evans a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Ryan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
A defining moment in my professional career came after a long search. As both a farmer and an astrologer, I was looking desperately for the ways they connect. In conventional astrology, the year begins at spring equinox. But as a flower farmer, I started planning my season in January! Was I wrong or was a astrology wrong? In a flash, I realized that the current astrological model was incomplete. I realized that astrology is just an extension of the natural cycles and seasons. After reorienting the beginning of the zodiac to Capricorn, it all made sense. I have applied methodologies and tested them rigorously using a ‘new’ system of understanding the Astrological world. A defining moment in my life came when I realized that it was OK to question thousands of years of truth.
Ryan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
When I was 18, my mother purchased an astrology reading for me. Half skeptical, and half intrigued I was amazed and mesmerized by the accuracy of what the astrologer had to say. I had to know how she did it. I bought my first book and the rest, they say is history. That was 1991. I have since studied with various astrologers and have been certified in the Steven Forrest School of Evolutionary Astrology. I currently teach astrology for his school, as well as having my own private practice with individuals and groups. I am a certified master evolutionary astrologer, and I have developed my own system, focusing on the natural cycles of Earth, and how they percolate up in our lives. In my readings, I cultivate the best of all possible expressions of the astrological archetypes for an individual the way a farmer will cultivate the growth of their flowers! I encourage the right soil type, moisture level, nutrients, sunlight, and climate for all of the different parts of our being to grow in. In my work, I suggest tools and methodologies that any individual can use for their own spiritual growth, psychological equilibrium, and emotional happiness. Ultimately, I help remind clients of their soul’s intention, spiritual purpose in this three-dimensional world, and how to exist in the happiest and most balanced way possible. What I’m so excited about in my work is how it is to bring astrology out of the heavens and onto the Earth. I ground it. I make it real. It’s not just vague concepts, and Greek myths, but real and actual engagements with living happily on this planet. If we want radishes, we plant radishes. The same is true with all of our intentions. The astrology I practice shows us exactly and precisely how to cultivate the growth of our intentions into positive manifestations. Astrology is a tool for all of us the way a hoe or compost is for the farmer. We all could use a little help getting things to grow in a healthy way. Astrology, or what I am choosing to call it, Seasonal Archetypeology, Shows us the right requirements for our healthiest blossoming.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Life has been a constant pivot. In fact, it is constant improvisation, testing and retesting, and chaos management that has led me to the place where I have had the insights that I have. With raising three children as a single father, putting food on the table was the number one priority. I juggled farming and astrology with various levels of success. But when one was under performing, I could focus on the other. I learned that diversification is incredibly important, especially if one is working on a small scale and for themselves. In all, the ability to pivot and improvise kept me aware and constantly searching for simplicity and efficacy. Constant chaos, it seemed, turned out to be the cauldron of creation.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your firm or practice?
This is quite interesting since my farming funded my study of Astrology. I was blessed to have a farm thanks to a beginning farmer loan. Working for myself and having only a few part time employees, life was scraping and saving for the first few years. After my confidence grew in Astrology, I integrated readings into my days as much as I could allow without losing the farm. Then became the balancing act of giving each enough attention so that they survive but not so much as to detract from the other. Eventually, both began paying off and now I can say I actually make a living doing what I love! Hooray!
