Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ryan Chua. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ryan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Innovation comes in all shapes, sizes and across all industries, so we’d love to hear about something you’ve done that you feel was particularly innovative.
The most innovative thing I’ve done in my social media career is always keeping up with the trends and anticipating the next big thing. When Instagram first came into existence, I saved up to get an iPod Touch just to be able to use the app since it wasn’t available on Android. I eventually switched to the iPhone and continued to post my photography work, even when most photographers were hesitant to join in and share their work on social media.
When Vine emerged, I was already posting video content and had amassed 50,000 followers before the platform shut down. When TikTok arrived, I was an early adopter, using it before the platform gained mass popularity during the pandemic lockdowns. As a result, I was able to amass over a million followers. When Instagram Reels launched, I was quick to post videos like no other.
Throughout the years, I also adapted to changes in algorithms and content styles. This adaptability allowed me to attract clients who needed the kind of content creation that I could provide for them.
Always stay ahead of the game and three steps ahead of the competition.

Ryan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
One of the advantages of being a millennial is having experienced the launch of new technology and social media platforms, from Facebook to TikTok, from Blackberry to iPhone, and so on. I’ve witnessed how changes in technology and social media platforms are interconnected and used that knowledge to my advantage in my work and with the companies I’ve collaborated with.
As a social media manager and content creator since 2009, I knew that social media was where I wanted to be. I have a deep passion for photography, videography, and connecting with a community that shares my interests. This passion led me to social media management and content creation. I’ve had the privilege of working with well-known brands such as Charlotte Russe, JINS Eyewear, Fyuse App, and many others, crafting content and overseeing their social media presence. Eventually, I founded my own social media agency, collaborating with influencers, small businesses, and industry professionals.
At present, I manage my agency while also working with a select group of clients. I serve as the creative director for IVY Swimwear and co-founded Rich and Pour Co, a tea and teaware company.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
When I was transitioning out of pharmacy, I contemplated enrolling in business school or starting my own company. Eventually, I embarked on the journey of launching a fashion magazine startup named Astonish Magazine. I learned so many valuable lessons in business, finances, partnerships, and life. Regrettably, due to poor leadership and financial challenges, I was forced to declare bankruptcy, which had a profound impact on my personal finances for several years. This setback led me to swear off ever starting my own company again and made it difficult for me to trust others in working relationships.
As I got back on track, I rediscovered my ability to trust people in the context of working partnerships and regained the confidence to establish my own companies. Finding the right partners is crucial when embarking on a new venture, and building trust and reliance on each other is a key element for ensuring success. You’re going to experience failure in your journey, it’s up to you whether you want to learn from it and move on, or keep blaming others (or yourself) for it.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I have both internal and external goals in my creative journey. Internally, I find fulfillment when I collaborate with other talented individuals to create beautiful photography or videos. On the other hand, there’s another mission I’m passionate about: helping other professionals achieve their creative goals to benefit their businesses. Over time, I’ve collaborated with various professionals, including dentists, chiropractors, chefs, personal trainers, and more, to assist them in reaching their social media objectives.
