We recently connected with Ryan Chite and have shared our conversation below.
Ryan, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Growing up, spending time with friends and family was and remains very important to me. My Mother is one of 15, and so that meant growing up getting to know a lot of other people. Sometimes it would be hard finding ways to get to know those people and that’s where games came long.
Games were the perfect ice breaker because they were the reason why we gathered around the table and spent time with one another. We all had our own schedules and lives, but the game was the social glue that kept us stuck in eachother’s company.
Our mission is to provide more people with the opportunity to get to know their friends, family members, coworkers and other people in their lives in a new way. The game is just a tool, the spending quality time with one another is the mission.
Ryan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My business partner Michael Sayago and I are both gamers and programmers by trade. It was a mutual friend on a project that introduced us because he said we were both nerds and like good beer, so we’d get along great. Turns out, he was right.
We started the business back in early 2020 when we were at a brewery and noticed a dusty shelf of boardgames that were going unused. Wondered to ourselves out loud, wouldn’t someone be playing those games if they knew the rules. But hardly anyone wants to read the rules. And then we realized if we learned the rules, we could help remove the largest entry barrier point of entry for new and experienced gamers alike.
Aleventures was born and now exists in a place where we host both public and private events. A business could hire us much like a Trivia Night operator for the evening to provide entertainment for their guests. Someone in charge of a company looking for a morale boosting activity to hire us to bring some group inspired games. Have a retirement home and looking for a way to get some quality bonding time amongst the Community? We can show up with a selection of games that can help!
We are in a state now where we do routine (read; monthly) events at breweries, where we are so proud of growing the gaming community in each area. There is no better feeling than seeing familiar faces return to one of your events, as they had enough fun last time they’d like to give it another go.
While we are a business and ultimately act as a board game store, where one can buy the games off us should they enjoy them, we are most proud of doing our part to getting more people into gaming.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
While we attempted to start our first event at Rockwell Brewery on East Street back in April 2020, the Pandemic had just started. Like so many others, we were struggling to figure out how to remain while we were experiencing a whole new World together.
Like so many others, we embraced being online and in our space, we started streaming video and boardgames that we played online. While meager audiences, maybe even a few bored family members would watch, it was important for our growth as a team as we spent a lot of time together and forged some powerful relationships that act as our foundation today.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
It’s a great question and one we’re still trying to figure out today, haha. Would say that we started by reading and watching everything we could about how to organically grow a meaningful audience. Not one where it was just numbers, but one where when we posted out events, we had an understanding that some of our audience would actually show up.
The journey began with an email to that large family I’m apart of, and explaining what we are trying to do. Three years later, some of my family and friends are still trying to understand what we do, and I appreciate that. The biggest spot where we found growth was working with the venues who had the large our reach. We do collaborative posts, and mentions and focus on the mediums where most people are surfing.
I can not say just how much of a social media machine my partner Mike is as he constantly is posting awesome pics about the games we feature and follow-up thank you posts after we do a game night at a venue. The secret seems to be keep posting and be genuine and the audience will come in time.
