We recently connected with Ryan Cheney and have shared our conversation below.
Ryan, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I would say as soon as I got my first guitar so around twelve. I was obsessed with Matchbox Twenty and would spend hours in my bed room singing to Push. When my parents bought me the guitar it just clicked to me. Songs are just poems with music behind them. I think I wrote my first song within the first week.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Ryan Cheney. I have been frontman for the band Fivefold for eighteen years. We’ve toured America and opened for acts such as The Offspring, Switchfoot and Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. We’ve amassed a growing number of fans across America as well as Europe.
Our goal is to change the world for the better or at least leave a positive light on when we leave. We’ve sadly experienced a lot of loss in our journey and that has truly shaped us and our view of what we try and create.
My proudest achievement is the album we have just released called “Fill In The Blank.” Truly feel we have created something special with these songs and I can’t wait for people to hear them!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
This might sound silly or selfish but the weight it lifts off my shoulders. All the words that I write are the same ones that have been swirling around in my head for weeks if not years. It’s a way of journaling for me I guess. When I finally listen the songs playing it teaches me something about myself.
Obviously when fans/friends are positively affected by the lyrics it brings me joy. That’s the goal.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I would say the loss of our friends and mentors. Jesse Berlin was our original guitarist and core band member. His vision really shaped this dream for the first time. He passed away at the young age of twenty one around the same time as our band mentor Jim Story.
We had to learn to work as a team at that point. We had to truly trust each other and build a tribe if we were to survive such a horrific time.
Sadly years later our band member Matthew Amelung passed away to cancer which was another fatal blow.
But we grew once again. The loss has given us a reason to never stop. If not for ourselves, for them.
