We were lucky to catch up with Ryan Auhl recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ryan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success can mean many things. Whether seeking success in our personal or professional lives, I think it ultimately comes from a few different traits.
I’d say time is by far the most important ingredient. Being willing to put in time, day in day out, whether it’s grinding at work or spending valuable time with loved ones, success will almost never fall into our laps; it’s the result of countless hours of effort, often unseen by others.
Success is always never linear. Each of our paths will be filled with twists, turns, and setbacks. How we respond to those challenges will ultimately inform how we come out of these situations. I like to focus on all of these as lessons as opportunities. At work this means willing to take risks and learning from the mistakes and failures. At home this means ongoing willingness to learn and try new things.
Lastly, you have to make your own luck. It’s easy to say that you have to be in the right place at the right time, but I’m not confident that luck really exists. I think the most lucky people are just the most likely to take advantage of the right opportunity that’s in front of us when we see it. The more seeds we plant over time will bear more opportunities for a lucky scenario in the long run. You have to put yourself in environments where the right opportunities are more likely to arise over time with a willingness to take a leap when you see an opportunity you like.

Ryan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
i I got into this business by total accident. When I met my partner–Thomas Turner–I was young and loved dance music. Fast forward to today, and that still rings true, but I’m happy with the scope of dance music and experiences that we deliver every weekend to fans. There’s nothing more fulfilling to delivering a new or different experience than our events, particularly when something has been refined over time and represents years of work.
Everyone who has joined the company in the last 10 plus years has the same enthusiasm for dance music and the events we produce. Over this period, dance music has continued to develop into more varied subgenres with acts that are pushing the boundaries of what electronic music is and means to many people. I’m incredibly proud of what this team does every day.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Leading a team is one of the most rewarding yet difficult aspects of my job. You always have to lead by example, challenge team members to challenge themselves, and help each team member to refine their best skills.

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
This career was a total accident. I met Thomas by going to his events, and over time we became friends. I made a website and a refined logo then jumped straight in not too long after. Without jumping like that, I don’t think I’d be in the same position that I’m in today. MIlestones of this journey include: hiring our first employees; producing our first large events and our first multi-day events; and lastly, returning from the pandemic stronger than ever.
