We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ryan Anderson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ryan, appreciate you joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
well, my middle name is james, after my grandpa, on my dad’s side. he passed away a number of years ago, but he would tinker with making frames, especially barn wood ones. so, frames by ryan james made total sense. and it rhymes.

Ryan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
my name is ryan & i live in a small town in the northwest corner or north dakota. crosby is it’s name. we have stop signs, no stop lights.
i started making frames as gifts for either friends or family. like, if i saw a certain band related art print, i’d think, man, this certain friend of mine really loves that band, they’d love this.
a few friends after awhile kinda pushed me & encouraged me to do more with the venture.
it’s mainly nights & weekends, & i’m based out of my dad’s wood shop. i make frames for photos & art prints or pretty much whatever you’d like framed. one man show, make the frames, cut the glass, put them together. hanging hardware, you name it..

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
i just want the individual who’s getting a frame made to be super happy with the finished product.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
well, in august of 2021 i almost cut a finger off. kinda funny, not really, but my dad is missing half of one of his fingers. but the injury definitely set me back, had to have surgery, couldn’t work type thing. i wasn’t being careless, just a freak accident & the router table got the best of me. took some time after to get back into the groove of things.
