We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ruth Murillo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ruth , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear your thoughts about family businesses.
I have brought into Ruths No5 salsa My Son, Husband, daughter ,sister and Brother. It has been a very interested dynamic, I had to take a step back and look at there strengths. Once I divided the task of the business it started to flow more smoothly, not that it is always perfect, however I would not change this for anything, One major step that we take is communication… this has been a key factor in our success.
Ruth , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I currently have 7 different flavors of salsas. We have originally started with two, our Roasted Regular and Tomatillo with chunks of avocado. I started Ruths No5 salsa because I am team green, love any Green tomatillo salsa, enchiladas suiza, chilaquiles verdes, all that yumminess , I LOVE. I Notice that many salsas that were sold in stores had no flavor and contain preservatives, I was brought up eating salsa with lots of flavor to enhance your diches and absolutely no preservatives. and well that is just what I did…. we get as many ingredients as we possibly can from our local farmers, I hand pick the mangos, pineapple, cilantro… etc. we do not make anything out of a can. We guarantee freshness or your money back, Ruths No5 is known to sell you the freshest salsa you can find. .. I make all of my salsas the night before any market, I make for you some of the salsas that we have been indulging since I can remember, this 7 salsas that I cook are not my recipes , they have been my inheritance from my great-grand mother whose roots come from Sonora BC MX. If you have never tried Ruths No5 Salsa, you need to stop by and have 1 or 7 samples. Our #1 salsa is the Roasted Red Spicy,
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
When I started Ruths No5 I was working full time in the private sector, and did that for 4 years. was working 80 hrs for cooprate america and 120 hrs in building my dream. Dreams do not come cheap, When I realize that my job was not supporting the dream and have to take out personal loans to initiate the business. That was just the fuel I needed to work harder to pay off any debt. I never saw the negative comments or the ” no Thank Yous” as ” I am not good enough” I saw/took them as a learning experiences and use them as steps to the ladder.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
During my first year of selling on Famer Markets, Pop-up and even some local mom and pop stores, Working hard and investing a lot of time in the kitchen, seeing that my numbers were not adding up I was more on the red numbers saw that maybe opening a business was not such a good idea, However on my one year anniversary I was invited to attend a free event where I can promote and even make some sales…. I though to myself … this will be my last event after that I was not going to renew my permits… who new that event was the kick off to Ruths No5 salsa…. sales picked up 50% and know we can say that I have quit my 9-5 job dedicate 100% of me to this amazing dream , my son is following my footsteps , he is going to college for business ( take over Ruths No5) and my husband too has quit his job and has dedicated his life to sell/promote the best darn salsa you will have in San Diego.
