We were lucky to catch up with Ruth Guerrier recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ruth , appreciate you joining us today. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I love being a business owner but I do believe having a regular job would be so much easier. The thought of going back to a regular job has crossed my mind a dozen times. I have probably thought about it each time I took a leap of faith to scale my business and even when life at home got more challenging. Then I remember all the hard work I put into someone else’s vision in the past. I often felt there was a low ceiling placed over my head and regardless of how hard I worked I could only stay within those parameters. It was suffocating at times and it seemed as though I could never reach my fullest potential.
I do not regret my past experiences. I have been able to take all of my past experiences and use them in my own business. I am now passionate about creating opportunities for my team to grow and reach their fullest potential. One of my goals is to create a work environment where people are excited to come to work and where they feel valued.
Ruth , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I wasn’t always organized. I once filtered all of my natural organizing skills into work and totally neglected to organize my home and personal life. At work, I would meet all of my deadlines and all of my goals but I failed to give that same type of energy and focus to myself. When I got married, that lack of balance quickly surfaced. I began making a few changes but it wasn’t until we had our son that I realized that I really needed to get my life organized. Especially if I was going to be a wife, a mom, work and keep my sanity! So I began using my organizing techniques at home. I was amazed at how it immediately removed the stress in my daily routine and gave me so much peace of mind. When I started my organizing business, I was able to easily relate to so many hard-working women that deal with some of the same challenges that I went through. I realized I could help change others’ lives through what I taught myself. Working with other women and helping them balance their work and personal life is my passion because I know how much it has truly changed my life.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I launched my business in 2019. February of 2020 I made the decision to invest in my business to begin to scale and as we all know the entire word shut down in March 2020 due to the pandemic. I definitely experienced extreme anxiety for a few weeks. I wallowed for a while and decided I had to make the most of this time of stillness. I began working on my brand. I identified my target audience and began working on how to help people understand how getting their home and life organized can positively affect their lives. I wasn’t sure how long the shutdown would continue but I kept working. As soon as things began to open up that summer my business took off. I learned so much from that time of stillness. I think the biggest lesson that I learned was that no matter what interruptions happen in life I just need to stay consistent and do all that I can to work on my business even when the end results seem distant or nearly impossible.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
When I first started organizing homes it was definitely a side hustle. I wanted to help contribute financially. I knew that I was good at it and in some way or another I had been organizing for most of my life. I didn’t realize that working on a home project or for friend and family would be so different than working on a project for a client. From the moment I finished my first official project I realized that this was what I was supposed to do. It was incredibly rewarding and I knew that so many families would need help. Aside from the few months of the 2020 pandemic shutdown my business has been growing steadily ever since the moment I started.
