We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ruth Chapa a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Ruth, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I learned from google, youtube, reddit and trial and error. I would have looked for a mentor to speed up the learning process.
Knowing your camera, and how to operate basic things like iso, shutter speed and aperture. Also, knowing that when you show up things might change so get use to being flexible and quick on your feet.
I would say that my biggest obstacles would be having a really hard time with the business side of things. I can learn and play with the artistic side of things because it’s fun but reading about the more serious things like taxes and marketing is still difficult to me.

I’m a photographer and creative director. I initially got into the industry out of boredom, I just needed something creative to fill my time to combat depression. Discipline came naturally because it became one of my favorite things to do and that eventually turned from hobby to job. I use photographs and film to help other creatives bring their ideas to life.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
the most rewarding aspect would be creating something out of nothing. granted photography can be an expensive habit, but once you have a camera you can get together with other amazing creative people and create things with just time and effort.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
my goal is to experience life, feel it deeply, digest it, take what i can from it and give it back.
