We recently connected with Rustam Vakilov and have shared our conversation below.
Rustam, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on so far has been a feature film named “Hell Hath No Fury,” my first-ever feature film as a director. This project not only let me express my own visual storytelling style but also has a backstory that I think can inspire and help other artists who might be on the verge of losing hope.
Back in June 2018, my wife who was my girlfriend at the time gifted me a film slate for my birthday. This gesture was deeply touching and meant a lot to me as it acknowledged my aspirations in the film industry. Just three months later, while studying Ron Howard’s directing masterclass, law of attraction kicked in and I got approached by a psychiatrist/writer with an offer to direct a feature film. The premise resonated with me deeply – a narrative exploring the journey of an agnostic man navigating through hell to find spiritual enlightenment. Little did I know, this storyline would mirror my own journey in bringing the film to fruition.
As time passed, “Hell Hath No Fury” encountered its share of setbacks and obstacles which led me through trials and tribulations, but I never stopped believing in the potential of this project given the vision I’ve had for it from day one. Over the years, it felt more and more like the movie might never materialize. The one thing that kept me going was that film slate my wife gave me. I even wrote the movie’s title on it along with my name. Eventually it became a symbol of my determination and gratitude, reminding me to keep pushing forward.
Finally, after five years of hard work and persistence, “Hell Hath No Fury” became a reality. I promised myself that I would bring this slate on the first day of shooting as a symbol of all the struggles I had to go through to get here, and also as my endless gratitude for its coming to fruition. The slate was a symbol of belief and hope, and I can not be thankful enough for receiving such a thoughtful gift. And none of this would have been possible without the infinite support of my brother who insisted I never give up, no matter how tough things get.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
During my time at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, I got my start in film by diving into making music videos. From there, I gradually moved into creating short films and eventually found my way into the world of commercials. I was always hungry to learn and wanted to soak up everything about production.
As I explored different aspects of filmmaking, I found a real passion for cinematography. But it was when I discovered color grading that I really fell in love. I saw the potential of how I can take a simple footage and transform it in what filmmakers call a “Cinematic Hollywood” look. I spent a lot of time perfecting my skills in this area, and eventually, I turned my love for color grading into a successful business as a freelance colorist.
I’m a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to my work. Whenever I encounter a problem, I’m quick to find alternative solutions to keep things moving smoothly. I take a lot of responsibility for the projects I work on, which gives my clients peace of mind knowing they’re in good hands. Over time, I’ve built up a solid reputation, and my clients know they can count on me. When it comes to directing, I take that same dedication to another level. I’m always looking for ways to bring a fresh perspective to my work, adding a touch of my own unique style to everything I do.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the best part about being a creative is the freedom to express myself in whatever way feels right. Bringing my ideas to life and sharing them with others is incredibly fulfilling. It’s like giving and receiving the best gift at the same time!

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
At the heart of my creative journey lies a relentless pursuit to continually evolve and strive towards the pinnacle of my potential, both as an individual and as a creator. Through my artistic endeavors, I am committed to not only honing my craft but also to personal growth and self-improvement. By channeling my creativity into my work, I aim to not only enrich my own life but also to develop deeper connections with others and cultivate a stronger sense of self-awareness and fulfillment.
