We recently connected with Dj Dolomite and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dj Dolomite thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I essentially taught myself the art of being a disc jockey. Growing up, I always around the art “Dj’ing” as one of my fathers’ life-long friend is a Dj. My father would visit him often when I was younger to exchange music with him and majority of the time, we would be there with my uncle as he would curate his own mixtapes. Around the year of 2014, I began to pursue a career as a disc jockey. While in college, I would practice a lot in my dorm and in the summer as well. With persistence, dedication, and consistency, I gradually began to see results. I started off Dj’ing for free on my college for a year or two just to get my brand out there. It eventually resulted to me getting club opportunities in Richmond, VA, Washington, DC, my hometown in the tidewater region of Virginia and many other areas. I also got the opportunity to tour during the summer of 2018. Knowing what I now as I be actively pursuing my career as a disc jockey, as of eight years, I don’t believe there is much I could have done to “speed up my learning process” really other than, maybe practicing with other friends were disc jockeys as well. Other than that, I feel like everything is as far as the process of learning the art of being a DJ is on God’s timing. The skill I believe is the most essential is the ability to “read the room”. There were really no obstacles that stood in the way of me learning more because I was really focused on perfecting my craft over the years.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
So I have been a disc jockey for eight years now.I began to really accomplish things as a Dj to help my resume out. I began to Dj in city areas of Virginia, such as Richmond, VA, through a mutual friend that went to the same college as me. I participated in big events such as club events and concerts in the area. Performing sets at which is known as Club Mainstage now, the late club Mansion 534 of downtown Richmond, VA and Club Plush, Richmond, VA as well as opening for acts such as G Herbo and NBA Youngboy, to name a few. Fast forward to the summer of 2018, I have presented an opportunity to go on a state to state tour as an entertainment company Tour DJ. After that, my business relocated in the Northern Virginia area/DC area, performing sets at different lounges in the Northern Virginia area and clubs in the Washington DC area such as Eden, Rosebar, St. Ives and Club Opera. I am most proud of the fact that I have had the opportunity to tour around a couple parts of the United States one time. I learned a lot from that experience in 2018 and am looking forward to apply what I learned from that previous experience.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative?
For me, being able touch people in a positive manner is what is most rewarding. OF course, the money is rewarding but knowing that I made someone forget about their problems temporarily through the way I play music is very rewarding to me . It’s almost an indescribable feeling.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My ultimate goal that is driving my creative journey is to ultimately become a touring disc jockey. I have been working towards that over the years and lord willing, with the right connections, that will come to fruition.
