We recently connected with RUSSELL SATTERTHWAITE and have shared our conversation below.
RUSSELL, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
when I was a commercial photographer I would often feel I under bid a job. Don’t be afraid to know your own worth.
RUSSELL, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I grew up in Florida and my friends and I would surf , we wanted pictures of ourselves. So my buddy got a camera and everybody used it. That’s how it all began. I’ve always been a water rat and lots of boating , fishing. Then someone asked you to shoot a wedding .and then real estate. Next thing you know I am working in a fashion studio in Miami. From there. I went out on my own and worked as a freelancer. After 30 years of that, I needed a real change and stopped shooting. But that didn’t last long. I bought an underwater system to shoot underwater and landscape. That’s what keeps me busy these days.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
It’s Satisfying when I do a show and people you DONT’ know really respond to your work. That’s a pretty great feeling. Having Somebody purchase my work and send you pictures of your work hanging in there home is terrific .
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I said this earlier, but it’s really important for me that you believe in yourself. In this world you have a lot of negativity about what people think is good or bad. The only thing that’s important is that you like your work. And you will get a lot of people that say they really love your world, but why does it cost so much?
