Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Russ Hosmer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Russ, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
The journey to founding Constant Progression Coaching was one of purpose, passion, and perseverance. From the moment I decided to create my own practice, I knew I wanted to build something that truly empowered people to transform their lives—physically, mentally, and emotionally. But as with any meaningful endeavor, the road to making this vision a reality was far from linear.
The early days were filled with excitement but also challenges. One of the first steps I took was defining the core purpose of my coaching practice. I asked myself: What unique value can I bring to my clients? That clarity became the foundation for Constant Progression Coaching. I then worked on aligning my skills and expertise with the needs of my ideal clients: busy professionals seeking to balance their careers with their health and personal growth.
Setting up the practice involved not only designing innovative coaching programs but also diving into the logistics of building an online platform. I researched digital tools, am in the process of building a user-friendly website, and created content that reflected my coaching philosophy. Additionally, I invested time and resources in ongoing education and certifications to ensure I was offering cutting-edge techniques in health and mindset coaching.
One of the biggest challenges was navigating the initial uncertainty—wondering if people would resonate with my vision. There were moments of self-doubt, especially when faced with the steep learning curve of marketing, client acquisition, and managing the day-to-day operations of a growing business. However, I leaned into the very principles I teach my clients: resilience, adaptability, and the power of a growth mindset. I learned to celebrate small victories and view setbacks as opportunities to refine my approach.
Looking back, I wouldn’t change the path I took because each challenge taught me invaluable lessons.
To any young professional considering starting their own practice, my advice is threefold:
1. Start with a clear purpose. Understand your “why.” It’s your North Star and will guide you through every decision.
2. Take small, consistent steps. Progress doesn’t happen overnight. Break your vision into manageable goals and celebrate each milestone.
3. Invest in yourself. Continuous learning and personal development are essential. Your growth as a professional will directly impact the value you bring to your clients.
Finally, embrace the discomfort of stepping into the unknown—it’s where the most profound growth happens. Building your own practice is not just about creating a business; it’s about making an impact and living in alignment with your values.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Russ “HOZ” Hosmer, the founder of Constant Progression Coaching, the premier online Life Coaching and Health Coaching platform dedicated to helping professional adults achieve physical vitality, mental clarity, and sustainable personal growth. With over 25 years of experience in Life and Health Coaching, I specialize in empowering individuals to break through mental barriers, overcome self-doubt, and unlock their full potential.
My expertise lies in mindset mastery, lean muscle gain, nutritional guidance, and sustainable habit-building, all tailored to support each client’s unique journey. Through a holistic and proven approach, I help clients develop a deeper understanding of their personal strengths, cultivate lasting confidence, and build the resilience needed to thrive in every area of their lives.
How I Got Into This Industry:
My journey into coaching started with my passion for fitness and personal growth. I discovered early on how transformative physical health could be—not just for the body but for the mind as well. This passion led me to a career where I could inspire others to reach their full potential by aligning physical health with mindset and personal values.
My professional background includes a range of accomplishments that shaped my expertise and coaching philosophy. I’ve had the privilege of working as the Physical Training Advisor to the US Marine Corps Eastern Recruiting Region, where I developed fitness programs to prepare recruits and permanent personnel for the rigors of service. I’m also a 2X All Armed Forces National Bodybuilding Champion and a World Bodybuilding Championship runner-up, achievements that taught me the discipline, precision, and mental fortitude required to succeed in both fitness and life.
Additionally, I served as a training and functional advisor to Life Fitness and Hammer Strength Equipment Research & Development Team and conducted an extensive muscle recovery study with Vanderbilt University, enhancing my understanding of optimal training and recovery techniques. My work as a training and recovery advisor for Nature’s Made Vitamins and Otsuka Pharmaceuticals deepened my knowledge of the critical role nutrition plays in physical and mental well-being.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Building a strong reputation in any market requires a combination of authenticity, consistency, and an unwavering commitment to delivering value. For me, the foundation of my reputation within the life coaching and health coaching industry has been built on three key principles: expertise, genuine care for my clients, and innovation.
Expertise:
I’ve combined my practical knowledge with cutting-edge research, such as conducting a muscle recovery study with Vanderbilt University and serving as a training and recovery advisor for Nature’s Made Vitamins and Otsuka Pharmaceuticals. This blend of hands-on experience and scientific insight resonates with clients who want reliable, results-driven coaching.
Genuine Care for My Clients:
At Constant Progression Coaching, we don’t just focus on achieving results—we focus on people. Each client is treated as an individual with unique goals, challenges, and potential. I take the time to understand their “why” and design coaching plans that align with their values and lifestyle. Clients often tell me they feel truly heard and supported, and I believe this level of care is a cornerstone of my reputation.
It’s not just about helping someone lose weight or build muscle—it’s about empowering them to live with purpose, confidence, and clarity. That transformation, both inside and out, is what sets my coaching apart.
Innovation and Creativity:
Another factor that has helped build my reputation is my willingness to think outside the box. I’ve developed and pioneered training techniques, such as constant muscle isolation through time-under-tension methods, which maximize efficiency and results. I’m also known for using equipment and movements in creative ways that challenge traditional fitness norms. This innovative approach not only keeps clients engaged but also delivers consistent progress.
Beyond fitness, I bring the same creativity to mindset and nutrition coaching, designing programs like the 24-Hour Productivity Challenge and the 21-Day Reset Cleanse to address holistic well-being. My ability to adapt and innovate keeps my coaching fresh and effective, which has earned trust and loyalty from clients.
Building a Community of Success:
Perhaps the most impactful element of my reputation is the success of the clients I serve. Their transformations are my greatest testimonials. By fostering a supportive community where clients feel empowered to share their wins and struggles, I’ve been able to create a ripple effect of inspiration. When someone sees a peer overcoming obstacles and thriving, it builds confidence in what’s possible for themselves.
Final Thoughts:
Reputation is earned through action, and I’ve worked hard to consistently deliver on my promises. I believe that staying authentic, prioritizing excellence, and maintaining a genuine commitment to helping others succeed are the keys to building trust and credibility. For any small business owner or creative looking to make their mark, my advice is this: Be passionate, stay consistent, and focus on creating real value for those you serve. That’s the foundation of a lasting reputation and the cornerstone of success.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
While training and knowledge are essential for success, I believe there are three additional qualities that are just as critical—if not more so—in the field of life coaching and health coaching: empathy, adaptability, and resilience. These qualities create the foundation for building meaningful connections, navigating challenges, and inspiring lasting transformation.
Empathy – The Heart of Coaching:
At its core, coaching is about people. To succeed, you must have the ability to genuinely understand and connect with others. Empathy allows you to step into your clients’ shoes, see the world from their perspective, and appreciate their unique struggles and aspirations.
When clients feel seen, heard, and valued, it creates a level of trust that makes transformation possible. They’re more willing to open up, tackle difficult challenges, and embrace the changes necessary for growth. Empathy turns coaching into a partnership rather than just a transaction, and it’s a skill that can’t be replaced by knowledge alone.
Adaptability – The Power to Pivot:
Every client is different, and so are their goals, obstacles, and circumstances. What works for one person may not work for another. To succeed in this field, you need the ability to adapt your approach, customize solutions, and remain flexible in the face of unexpected challenges.
Adaptability also extends to staying ahead in an ever-evolving industry. Whether it’s integrating new techniques, leveraging technology, or responding to shifts in client needs, the ability to pivot and innovate is key to staying relevant and effective.
Resilience – The Drive to Keep Going:
Success in any field comes with its share of setbacks, and coaching is no exception. From dealing with clients who struggle to stay motivated to facing challenges in building your business, resilience is what keeps you moving forward.
Resilience isn’t just about bouncing back—it’s about learning from every experience and growing stronger because of it. As a coach, modeling resilience for your clients is a powerful way to inspire them to overcome their own obstacles. It shows them that setbacks aren’t failures but opportunities to regroup, refocus, and push forward.
The X-Factor – Passion and Purpose:
Finally, I believe that passion and purpose are the forces that fuel everything else. When you are genuinely passionate about what you do and deeply connected to the “why” behind your work, it drives you to show up fully for your clients every day. That passion is contagious—it inspires trust, motivates action, and creates a lasting impact.
Final Thoughts:
Success in coaching isn’t just about having the right tools or knowledge; it’s about bringing your whole self to the table. When you lead with empathy, adapt to challenges with creativity, and persist with resilience, you build a foundation for lasting success—not just for yourself, but for the clients you serve. My advice to anyone entering this field is simple: Let your passion guide you, stay open to learning from every experience, and always put people first. That’s how you truly make a difference.
