We were lucky to catch up with Ruoyu Zhang recently and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, Ruoyu thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.

As a fellow Chinese immigrant, I deeply resonate with the protagonist in “Recipient” as he navigates the complexities of love and longing in a foreign land. Like him, I’ve experienced the challenges and triumphs of being an international student in the United States, which makes the story’s themes of cultural adaptation and personal growth particularly poignant for me. Through his journey, I see reflections of my own struggles and aspirations, forging a powerful connection between myself and the protagonist, as well as with the overarching narrative of “Recipient.”

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Ruoyu Zhang is a cinematographer from Shanghai, China who considers her life an adventure. She always loves to be trying something new. She used to stand on a stage as the singer of a rock band. And she also stood on the platform of a primary school as a Chinese teacher. But now, by joining Florida State University’s Film School, she is standing behind a camera on a movie set. As a cinematographer, she has found that the most comfortable way to express herself is visually.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?

As a cinematographer, I aspire to leverage my personal experiences and perceptions of life to assist fellow directors who share similar backgrounds, in telling their own unique stories. Through my lens, I aim to capture the essence of their narratives, imbuing them with authenticity and resonance, ultimately contributing to a diverse tapestry of cinematic expression.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

As a cinematographer, the greatest reward my work offers is the ability to experience countless narratives within finite time constraints. Each story encountered becomes a profound journey, enriching my understanding of both the world around me and my own self. Through the lens, I delve into diverse realms of human experience, fostering a deeper connection with the intricacies of life and enriching my perspective with each frame captured.
