Ruoyong(Eli), thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s talk about innovation. What’s the most innovative thing you’ve done in your career?
One of my most cherished design projects is Wel AI, the Personal Email Assistant App. This project, from its inception to its execution, has been a journey filled with innovation, challenges, and ultimately, triumphs.
Wel AI isn’t just any email tool; it’s a expriment to the power of innovation in bridging the gap between technology and human interaction. From the very beginning, I envisioned Wel AI as more than just another AI assistant. I wanted it to be like a trusted writing buddy, seamlessly integrating into users’ lives while respecting their individuality.
The journey of creating Wel AI was anything but easy. We faced numerous challenges along the way, from balancing AI assistance with user autonomy to navigating the intricacies of email communication. But with each challenge came an opportunity for innovation.
Through research, collaboration, and iteration together with my team, we make the Wel AI concept into a tool that not only enhances productivity but also fosters meaningful connections between users and technology. And the recognition we’ve received speaks volumes – from prestigious silver awards from the Muse Awards and Vega Digital Awards to a bronze award from the International Design Awards (IDA).
These honors aren’t just symbols of achievement; they’re reminders of the passion and dedication that went into making Wel AI a forward thinking concept that shows care from a human perspective. From conceptualization to design delivery, I poured my heart into this project, and seeing it recognized on an international stage is truly humbling.

Greetings! I’m Ruoyong(Eli) Hong, a designer and prototyper with a keen focus on emerging technologies. My journey into the digital design realm began with a background in urban planning and spatial design, where I developed a passion for blending technology with human experiences. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of contributing to groundbreaking projects and shaping the future of various industries.
Currently, I serve as a Senior Interaction Designer and Design Lead at Robert Bosch, a global technology powerhouse. In this role, I lead design projects that integrate cutting-edge technologies such as AI, AR, and autonomous mobility into products that enhance people’s lives. Some of my proudest achievements are spearheading the development of standard of HMI system development guidelines for L2+ ADAS systems and defining the interaction design for AI powered recognition products for future home appliances.
These guidelines utilize state-of-the-art AI systems to balance the best user experience with system safety and efficiency. I’ve had the honor of obtaining several patents throughout this process and bringing the standard to the massive development, which represents a significant milestone in our journey towards revolutionizing human-machine interactions in AI era.
Apart from my role at Bosch, I’ve had the privilege of being a design peer reviewer for prestigious international competitions like The Interaction Awards (IxDA). This experience has taught me the importance of making a real impact. Whether it’s in business or society, I believe in creating meaningful change through everything I do.
The project that garnered us recognition at the 2023 Vega Awards, Wel AI, exemplifies this principle. This AI-powered personal communication app redefines the integration of AI into everyday email tasks, fostering respectful collaboration between users and AI. By prioritizing user autonomy and individuality, Wel AI sets a new standard for human-centric AI interactions, paving the way for a future where technology enhances rather than diminishes human experiences.
Looking ahead, I’m excited about the future of the digital industry, particularly the convergence of AI, AR/VR, and autonomous technologies. As these technologies continue to evolve, I see immense potential for innovation and transformation. By staying at the forefront of these developments and embracing a mindset of continuous learning and experimentation, I am confident in our ability to shape a future where technology serves as a catalyst for positive change.

Any advice for managing a team?
As I am leading a team of six designers and researchers, it requires a balanced approach to management and morale. Encouraging open communication and collaboration among team members fosters a sense of camaraderie and mutual support. Providing opportunities for skill development and career advancement demonstrates investment in the team’s growth and boosts morale. Recognizing and celebrating achievements, both individual and collective, reinforces a positive team culture. Additionally, fostering a supportive environment where team members feel empowered to share ideas and take ownership of projects contributes to high morale and productivity.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
In the UX or product design market, building a reputation requires a blend of expertise, consistency, and engagement. Demonstrating a deep understanding of user-centric design principles and consistently delivering exceptional results are crucial. Actively participating in industry events, contributing to thought leadership platforms, and engaging with the design community helps in establishing credibility and visibility. Moreover, fostering strong client relationships through effective communication and delivering value-added solutions enhances reputation within the market.
