We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rukmini (vinaya) Rednam. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rukmini (Vinaya) below.
Alright, Rukmini (Vinaya) thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents never limited me. I didn’t always get the perfect score or was always first in my class but they never let me limit my imagination to what I could become. They supported me, my curiosity and my desire to forge a path for myself. Now as a parent myself, I recognize how important and vital this was for me to reach the success I have today. I am forever grateful to them.
Rukmini (Vinaya), love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon with My Houston Surgeons. I have been in practice for almost a decade and can without doubt tell you who I am today was always who I was meant to be. I love what I do and feel so blessed to be able to positively impact the lives of my patients. I chose to trademark myself as the Confidence Doc after years of hearing both my cosmetic and reconstructive patients tell me how good it felt to be in their skin and how much confidence they had after we worked together. While I perform almost all aspects of plastic surgery my main areas of the focus are post massive weight loss body contouring, and microsurgical breast reconstruction after cancer. I proud to say that these are two areas I really excel in and am able to provide results and care that I worked so hard perfect. My approach to plastic surgery care is a little different from some, but I truly feel that a holistic approach taking care of my patients as a whole both physically and mentally is what sets my team and practice apart from a sea of excellent plastic surgeons.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Yes! If I could go back I would not only choose the same profession but I would have worked to get earlier exposure to the field. I grew up in a large family of physicians so I was exposed to medicine very early on and knew that it was my calling from an early age. But I had no exposure to plastic surgery until much later in medical school. Had medicine not been my path I could in an alternate life see my self as a fashion designer. Still creating, sewing and making something beautiful, just a different medium.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
As I was finishing my training I knew I wanted to move to someplace warm with family. That’s how I decided upon Houston. My brother lived here and it’s always warm! I started looking into practices that seemed like a good fit and I happened upon one with 3 surgeons, Houston Plastic Craniofacial and Sinus Surgery. One of the surgeons was actually two years ahead of me in the same medical school and reached out to me. They were looking for another surgeon but were not advertising. In Houston it’s common to find new doctors from within the many many training programs locally, and being an outsider makes it more difficult some times to break in. But I was determined and found out the head of the practice was going to be at a meeting that I was attending. Like anyone looking for a good job, I found a picture of him online and decided to walk around until I “bumped” into him. I eventually got my shot and blurted out that I knew he was looking for someone and that I’m that person. He was an intimidating guy, back then, and when he said ok to an interview the next day I took the opportunity. This meant missing the rehearsal dinner of my best friend from high school. But as an amazing best friend are she told me to go for it! Her mom wasn’t pleased. I interviewed, landed the job, partnered after 4 years and the rest is history.
