We were lucky to catch up with Ruihong Liu recently and have shared our conversation below.
Ruihong, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
While pursuing my studies at the Art Institute of Chicago, I specialized in the fashion design core department, where I acquired extensive professional knowledge about garment creation, including developing collections, conducting research, draping, creating patterns, and constructing garments. I supplemented my formal education by reading numerous professional books and watching films to deepen my understanding of clothing structures and draw new sources of inspiration. Reflecting on my journey, immersing myself more deeply in creative communities, and seeking mentorship could have accelerated my learning process. Setting specific, focused goals and dedicating more time to consistent practice would have further hastened my progress. The most essential skill has been maintaining a sense of curiosity and a willingness to explore any area that piques my interest, driving continuous learning and innovation. However, creative blocks, especially at the outset of designing new collections, posed significant obstacles. During these times, I sought external visual stimuli through films, books, and photography to reignite my inspiration and overcome these creative hurdles.

Ruihong, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As a fashion designer, documentary photographer, and poet, my work is deeply rooted in the art of documentation. I am fascinated by the fragility and importance of memories, which is a central theme in my creations. Graduating from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago has influenced my approach, resulting in both soft and intimate works, inviting contemplation and connection while preserving precious moments.
My artistic expression is driven by the belief that memories are the eternal threads that weave the fabric of my being. They are like the delicate petals of a flower, susceptible to the influences of the outside world that can cast shadows on their integrity. Within the ordinary aspects of life, I find treasures to cherish. My work serves as a boudoir for these memories, a sanctuary for my innermost thoughts, and a reflection of my soul.
Through my fashion designs, documentary photography, and poetry, I aim to provide a unique space where others can reflect and connect with their memories and experiences. What sets me apart is this dedication to capturing the ephemeral and turning it into something lasting and meaningful. I am most proud of creating art that resonates personally with my audience, offering them a glimpse into my inner world while encouraging them to explore their own.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Society can best support artists and a thriving creative ecosystem by fostering curiosity, continuous learning, and artistic expression. This starts with comprehensive education programs that emphasize technical skills and creative processes, supplemented by access to professional resources like books and films. Networking opportunities, workshops, and mentorship programs are crucial for connecting artists with peers and mentors, accelerating their growth.
Financial support through grants, scholarships, and funding opportunities is essential to alleviate financial pressures and enable creative exploration. Public and private sectors can support the arts through patronage, sponsorships, and purchasing artwork.
Promoting a culture that values and respects artistic endeavors is vital. This includes celebrating artistic achievements, integrating art into daily life, and providing accessible public exhibition spaces. Lastly, society should document and preserve artistic works to maintain cultural memories and inspire future generations.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative for me is the ability to transform fleeting moments and fragile memories into lasting, meaningful expressions. Through my work, I can capture and preserve the essence of human experiences, offering a space for contemplation and connection. This process not only allows me to explore and express my innermost thoughts and emotions but also creates a shared experience with my audience, resonating on a personal level and encouraging them to reflect on their memories and stories. The joy of seeing others connect with my work and finding inspiration in it is incredibly fulfilling and drives my passion for continuous artistic exploration.
