Ruhani , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Talk to us about building a team – did you hire quickly, how’d you recruit the first few team members? Any interesting lessons?
When I joined it took a while for the existing staff in place to trust in my abilities and thoughts and allow me to help lead the way. Honestly i’d have the same skepticism myself if placed in the same position. Being passionate on a day to day business, and learning more about my team helped me to learn more about what they value, and how they work. There still is resistance sometimes to some ideas, but I think working collaboratively with our team has really helped make everyone valued and that they have a say, which is what we all want at the end of the day. When interviewing, I’m always interested in people who are passionate about skin care and have a curiosity to continue to grow and evolve. Sometimes that’s as easy as just having a simple conversation that isn’t related to work when interviewing. I think if I was starting today, i’d be more patient with myself and believe in the process and what I was doing that things would work out the way I’ve hoped they would.

Ruhani , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a passionate, hard-working businesswoman in the early stages of my career. After getting my J.D and MPH, I decided to work on my family business, Sandhu Dermatology to help transition the brand to having a larger cosmetic base for our clients. I’m passionate about how changes in skin care regimens and other forms of cosmetic self-care can change our clients’ confidence in themselves and improve their lives. We differentiate ourselves from the competition by applying our patient-centered care approach to the cosmetics portion of our business, so clients know they are buying products that will help them for their specific issues. I’m proud of the work we do at Sandhu Dermatology, and would love our clients to know that we are constantly incorporating their ideas and other best practices to improve the experience for our clients.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
The back-to-basics approach we take at our practice is what has helped build the reputation to what it is today. We care about our clients, and honestly they can tell we are passionate about the quality of service we provide. There’s a lot of noise out there from the various forms of social media that are available to us now, and we try to filter through that and what competitors are doing, to really provide our clients with a more personalized experience when they visit us. It’s all about modern treatment options with the back to basic, personalized approach which makes all the difference in the quality of care and honestly our clients can see that.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Having a servant approach is the best way to maintain high morale for our team. Our philosophy is to focus on the growth and well being of our staff. We want them to feel and know we want them to grow within our company and work together with me to improve the client experience. To do this I feel its important to have an open door approach to communicating with staff. From the smallest issues to the largest, we want both our staff and clients to know they are all important stakeholders in the process of making Sandhu Dermatology into what it is and what we hope it becomes. Much like improving your physical appearance, its important to improve yourself as a whole and constant learning and growth really helps to do that, and we feel the staff can feel that difference.
