Alright, Rudy Arora, Sanjay Vattamreddy, Sriyansh Shah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been one of the most interesting investments you’ve made – and did you win or lose? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
We spend over 15 hours learning how to speak in different accents during quarantine. From binging youtube videos to speaking to the mirror, we did it all. This turned out to be one of the best investments of our life because it not only helped us elevate our comedic performances but also develop a talking point to garner attention at social gatherings and break up awkward situations.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Love of Laughter is a youth-led nonprofit dedicated to giving back to the elderly through our passion for the performing arts. We empower young artists to share their talents with the world by performing at nursing homes and retirement communities.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
One day, while visiting a relative at a nursing home, we began telling a few jokes in the lobby. And as more and more people started to congregate, the conversation transformed into a Netflix Special, starring us as the main characters.
After seeing the smiles on the audience’s faces and hearing the laughter, we knew that we had to do it again. We spent the next month partnering with local nursing homes, recruiting teen performers – comedians, pianists, singers – and founding our nonprofit Love of Laughter.
Our primary mission is to bridge the gap between generations by spreading laughter and joy at nursing homes and retirement communities.
But our performances also help us accomplish another goal. As artists, we were initially devastated by the circumstances resulting from the pandemic. The Standup Comedy, Guitar, and Speech performances we had worked on for so long all got postponed or canceled. LOL provided us with a way to share our talents with the world in spite of external circumstances.
We also help our volunteer performers, composed entirely of aspiring teen artists, test new content and gain confidence. Our performances have helped many of our performers gain exposure and earn new opportunities. Oftentimes, we told new jokes at the nursing home to see if the crowd would find it funny. We then interviewed the audience and looked back at the recordings to find ways to improve our content.
No matter how many shows we perform at, our motivation remains the same. We’re chasing the same smiles we saw that day in the lobby.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Definitely the friends we’ve made
Following our first routine, we had a conversation with Mr. Barnes, a retired veteran who told us that this was the first time he had laughed so much in the last 2 years. As we shared life stories and discussed the lows and highs of our performance, we realized that we’d made a new friend for life. Mr. Barnes even inspired us to apply for Boys State after telling us about the amazing time he had in the program. (Mr. Barnes was an unlikely friend that was formed through an unlikely circumstance. Our organization opened us to a variety of interesting, wise, and spirited groups of people.
Mr. Barnes was the first of many.
Since Love of Laughter is run by volunteers, we’ve had dozens of singers, rappers, pianists, violinists, and comedians perform for us. Because of this, the backstage is always a hotbed of creativity and inspiration. We once had a comedian teach us how to speak in different accents while we waited for the go signal to deliver our routine. On another occasion, a performer tried to teach us how to beatbox in return for a mini lesson on deadpan humor.
We’re grateful for the opportunity to be able to use our talents to help others smile.
