Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ruby Sandoval. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ruby, appreciate you joining us today. How do you think about vacations as a business owner? Do you take them and if so, how? If you don’t, why not?
Absolutely! When I first started my photography business, I told myself that I didn’t want my job to control my calendar. It wasn’t easy at first, but now I am happy to share that my business works around my personal and family calendar, not the other way around. I also take ALL of December off to have my full focus on my family during the magical holiday season.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I fell in love with the wedding industry after planning my own wedding. I knew I wanted to be involved somehow, but it hadn’t clicked to me that photography and my love for cameras could that how. I learned that your wedding day goes back in a flash and that is why I now focus on two things for my wedding gems (my couples):
1. Taking timeless photos of those emotional, candid moments so they can remember them forever.
2. Helping them enjoy the experience and to be fully present without worrying about their mascara being smudged or their dress needing to be fluffed.
If I’m being honest, I was kind of a skeptic when it came to true love. I wasn’t sure it was something I would ever experience – until I met my now-husband… and all my doubts flew out the window. I take documenting love stories seriously because love is a magical, once-in-a-lifetime kind of thing. And I want them to enjoy every single minute of their wedding day with the one they love.
Something else I learned? Marriage is hard sometimes. And having a keepsake album of timeless wedding photos is the perfect way to relive your wedding day, reconnect with all those feelings of love, hope, and commitment, and remind you of why this is all worth it.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being able to freeze those special moments in time for my gems to look back on. The biggest reward is giving them something they can look at, transporting them to that specific moment in time, and having all those feelings rushing back.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
To be successful, you have to hustle and hustle hard. Although there is some truth to it, there’s no need to hustle 24/7. You can work smarter and not harder and still be successful. It isn’t worth it to hustle hard and miss out on my kids growing up. Having them remember me sitting in front of a computer working all day is not what I want. So although I did hustle hard at first, I realized it’s ok to set boundaries. It’s ok to take charge of your calendar. It’s ok to LIVE!
