Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ruby Juu. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Ruby thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
Being misunderstood is never a thing of the past for me. When I first started out doing Radio/Podcasting work, a lot of people took my craft as me being messy because I was so passionate about it. So here is what I do as a Podcaster / Radio personality. I report on celebrity gossip and I add my own little twist with it to make it comical, sometimes the gossip is too serious. When the gossip is too serious I leave it as is.
Many people took me doing celebrity gossip as well as real life gossip as me being messy and dramatic, but I wasn’t none of those things. I just simply had a passion for talking about celebrities, news in the Hip-Hop world and other people’s business including mine. My idea of me talking about these things was to bring light to what was happening in a world that some of us may never know about. I like to inform, So my Podcast/Radio is more informative than anything. Celebrity gossip is just the main course of my Podcast. Ruby Juu Radio inspires, motivates, gives you advice, talks about real-life topics, and we also teach you ways you can get paid on a daily basis.
So, you ask me to tell a story about my work being misunderstood or mischaracterized. Well here we go. Now you guys have interviewed me before and we discussed my journey of Radio/Podcasting, but for those of you who don’t know me or new to meeting me I started my Radio/Podcasting journey on this app called Stationhead. This was an app created by a musical artist, So he made the app similar to a real radio station. Once I was familiar with the app and started gaining fans and listeners, people started really misunderstanding my work. They would say things like oh she is messy, I wouldn’t dare listen to her, Why is someone else business her business, I bet she can’t keep a secret, No wonder people don’t like her for real.
Hearing all these things made me feel all types of emotions, but that didn’t stop me. So one day this lady who had been secretly listening to my Podcast/Radio show messaged me and told me that she finally listened to my show in its entirety and she was surprised at what she had been missing. The lady thought that my show was all about being messy and dramatic, but actually the whole purpose of the show was to inform you, inspire you, motivate you, and help you earn some cash in the meantime.
When she finally took that 1 hour to listen to my show she was very motivated to start her journey of doing what she loved, she apologized to me for judging and mischaracterizing my show. The lady went on to gain me more fans and more listeners by promoting my show every chance she got.
So the moral of the story is:
Always give your craft all you got, there are always going to be people that misunderstand what you’re doing. It only takes one person to understand you and your work. That’s when the world will see you differently.
Interesting thing I took from that experience is to start putting disclaimers in my work.
Ruby , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello, My name Is Ruby Juu.
Ruby Juu is an independent artist that decided to start a podcast/ radio station about 3yrs ago. Ruby Juu has made a name for herself in the interactive radio/ podcasting world. Ruby Juu is very versatile, straight forward, no cut, and genuine with her radio content. Ruby Juu gives her listeners something to look forward to when listening to comedy, culture. inspiration, advice, crazy news stories, motivation, and ways you can get paid.
What made me get into this venture of podcasting/radio? Let’s talk about it. I went through a traumatizing situation with a so-called friend. It left me so angry, and so hurt. I started to lash out at the people around me who really cared about me. So one day I was scrolling on Instagram and I came across this ad about an interactive radio app that allows you to play music, talk, mingle, gain fans and earn money while doing so. I needed an outlet, a space where I can talk about what I went through without being judged, reticent, criticized or joked about. I jumped right into the app no question asked and started mingling with people and pretty much everything has been history from there.
As a podcaster I get a lot of questions about podcasting like how I got started, what it takes to get worldwide plays, how to get sponsorships, donations, etc.
So I have taken it upon myself to create a podcasting mentorship program as well as an online course to help people start on their podcasting journey.
The type of services I offer are:
Podcast mentorship program- Get it in With Ruby Juu -This a program where I mentor you step by step on how to start a podcast, how to distribute your podcast, how to advertise on a budget, and also how to get those plays world wide. I’m literally giving you everything I did to get to where I am today,
Podcasting online course – Get Paid to Talk Sh*T – The online course consists of Ruby Juu teaching you how to start a podcast, getting your voice heard worldwide, how to get paid to podcast, and so many other important things about podcasting that you must know.
With the services I offer I am providing convenience by putting all the information that would normally be researched separately all in one course. Basically, I have done the research for you and all you have to do is sit, pay attention, and take notes. The things that I feel separate me from others is my passion and my drive. The fact I am giving all the things I did become successful is something amazing in itself. Most successful people don’t tell you their secrets to success. I guess I am a little different because I want everyone to win.
The thing that I am most proud of is my ability to keep striving when things don’t go as planned. A lot of times people give up on their work or their artistry because things don’t pan out how they think it’s supposed to or they feel as if they don’t have the support from others. These things can automatically make you feel like a failure, but the only failure is giving up and not trying. To my potential clients, followers, fans, I want you guys to know that Ruby Juu is always going to have your best interest at heart, to keep going and never give up on your dreams. Ruby Juu Radio is not just a brand it’s a movement, we are here to inspire you to be great all while informing you.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was not to be biased in a conversation, especially when interviewing people. As a podcaster/radio host you will encounter all kinds of people. The conversations, tones, life experiences and vibes are very much different with each person I have encountered. When I first started interviewing people I was one sided, not transparent, and judgmental. I quickly learned that being in that mind frame as an interviewer is definitely not going to gain me more guests. So a little back story, back in my interactive radio days I would bring people up on my platform to either interview them or get their point of view on a topic. One day this older gentleman who was like one of my fans wanted to come on the stage and speak his peace. I allowed him on stage to speak and well lets just say it didn’t end well. I was not being transparent to his opinion one the topic that we were discussing, that caused friction and also caused me to lose a few listeners and potential guests. So from that day forward I had to learn that one’s opinion doesn’t have to be my opinion for me to listen, to be open, and agree. I realize that if I wanted a worldwide platform I would have to learn not to be one sided and judgmental.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The mission that is driving my creative journey is the chance to inspire as many people as I possibly can. As a content creator and podcaster it gets a little hard when you are doing it on your own. So my goal is to stay the course and inspire as many people as I can on my journey. When I started on my journey I had no idea what I was doing, or where I was going. Starting was a scary thing because I didn’t know where I was headed or who to turn to for advice, or moral support. I started to watch other people to get inspired, listened to motivational speeches, followed people that were doing or creating the same things I was doing. While doing all of these things I realized that I wanted to inspire people like me, so I made it my mission to inspire as many people as I possibly can while I’m on this creative journey.
