We were lucky to catch up with Ruby Huggins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Ruby thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
We are always working on making this community space grow to best fit the needs of the patrons and employees, but the latest expansion of our company (Handsome Boys Hospitality) has allowed us to work on some exciting updates to the 2-year-old Slashers. Joshua Schmitz has built so many unique businesses out of the 5126 E Colfax location over the years, from Bellwether Barber shop, coffee shop, custom clothing, and finally Slashers Dive Craft. We are so grateful to work in a creative space where we get to listen to feedback and come up with new fun things all the time. We have a new summer menu of craft cocktails to roll out alongside the updated back patio and barcade end of July 2023! Full of all your favorite games, drinks, and horror movies, there is so much more fun to be had!
Ruby , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We have a team made of driven creatives that all work off each other’s strengths. Ownership wanted to reopen this spooky dive bar in 2021 with a staff that could support themed seasonal cocktail menus as well as a range of fun events every month. Featuring so many local artists, vendors, and preformers, follow us on Instagram for upcoming events! The design of our space is as close as you can get to a movie night at the Munster house! Oddities, creatures, and features to be found in our now three rooms of haunting comfort. Ask any of our staff about the movies behind the drinks, or grab a beer and shot and play some pool while listening to face melting tunes.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The goal for Slashers moving forward into a new exciting year is to expand the types of events we have scheduled each month and get the word out to more (21+, no vertical ID) friends about the fun to be had with our updated space. Each person who works at Slashers invests a lot of creative energy into providing quality service in a unique spooky space. We want to extend a hand to all the other weirdos out there and let them know they have a safe space with us Tuesday-Sundays.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The best thing about Slashers is the inclusivity we strive to show through our events and seasonal changes. Denver is a wealth of opportunity with all the creative people working now who bond over the strange and unusual side of things. By providing a space where all types of people can feel seen and heard is a crucial practice for us to further community engagement. High tides raise all ships over here, haunted or not!
