We were lucky to catch up with Rubi Rockafella recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rubi, thanks for joining us today. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
Being a creative is not for the weak, one of the biggest surprises for me was that everyone will not understand all that comes with it and will not know how to support you fully. when i met my boyfriend he was the furthest thing from a creative, logical, type A tech guy if you must haha, i was scared that my lifestyle would freak him out, i thought “there’s no way this guy is going to get it” and boy was i wrong, he has shown up to every shoot, let me sew things on him, helped hold lights, drive models, i mean everything that i have needed he has been by my side. it seems like the bare minimum but i was truly struggling to get my friends to understand the amount of help and support i needed as a starting out creative and he just came in and it clicked. a life unfamiliar to him and he just jumped on head first, that’s the kindest thing someone has done for me. he’s truly the best.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m rubi! i’m a sustainable stylist, designer and creative director! i’m specialize in giving vintage and discarded items a new life. i think i create a safe and exciting space for people that want to get into fashion and are not sure how to or want to switch things up in a funky way! i can be a little crazy when it comes to my vision but i think that’s why people come to me, i listen to them and i execute to the best of my abilities!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
When i lay in bed at night and see a clear vision of an idea and then a few weeks later there it is in tangible form for others so perceive…it means the world to me. everyone can create their own story and narrative and i get to watch it all unfold, there’s nothing like it!

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
So back to something i pointed out earlier, IT TAKES A VILLAGE like a lot of support from those around you that aren’t pursuing a job in the industry. it also means i’m broke a lot! haha i work for myself meaning i’m on my phone a lot and i’m working 25/8 it’s super super exciting but i think sometimes it just feels that nobody understands and it causes you to feel alone. when people don’t show up and think “oh she’s got it” we DONT!! we need you more than you know.
