We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ruben Rosado. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ruben below.
Ruben, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
A few years ago, I found myself at a crossroads in life. Despite a stable job in Warehouse Automation in Pennsylvania, my heart was set on pursuing my childhood dream of acting. I had always been passionate about performing, and as I started gaining more opportunities in New York City, I knew I had to take a leap of faith.
Leaving behind the comfort of my job and the familiarity of home, I packed up and moved to the bustling streets of New York City all on my own. It was an exhilarating but daunting decision. Finding affordable housing in the city proved tough, and I spent my savings on temporary accommodations like rooms and Airbnbs. At one point, I even resorted to crashing in my car to save money, all while juggling a job and auditioning for roles.
Despite the challenges, I never lost sight of my dream. With determination and a bit of hustle, I managed to secure a job that allowed me to support myself while chasing after acting gigs. Slowly but surely, I saved enough to move into a cozy apartment and establish a stable life in the city.
Along the way, I met incredible friends and industry professionals who cheered me on and shared my journey. Each audition and role taught me valuable lessons in perseverance and resilience, reaffirming my passion for acting despite the uncertainties.
Looking back, taking that risk to pursue acting in New York City was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It wasn’t just about following a dream; it was about embracing growth, learning from challenges, staying positive and finding fulfillment in doing what I love.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
To really support artists and creatives, we can do a few things that make a big difference:
1. **Help Them Financially**: Artists often struggle to make ends meet, so giving them grants and funding helps them focus on their art instead of worrying about financial instability.
2. **Give Them Spaces to Create**: Artists need places like studios and galleries where they can work and show their art. It’s important these spaces are affordable and accessible.
3. **Teach Them Skills**: Artists need more than just talent—they also need to learn how to manage their careers. Workshops and mentors are essential to teach them things like how to promote themselves and handle the business side of things.
4. **Celebrate Their Art**: By putting on exhibitions, festivals, and sharing their work online, we can help artists get the exposure they need and appreciation.
5. **Stand Up for the Arts**: It’s important to advocate for arts funding and policies that support our fellow artists. This shows that art is valued in our communities and that our artists have our full support.
6. **Get Everyone Involved**: Bringing art into our communities through events and projects helps bring people from all around to see its importance and enjoy it more.
7. **Pay Them Fairly**: Artists deserve fair compensation for their hard work and respect for their creative ideas. Fair pay and protections for their ideas are crucial for their livelihoods.
8. **Support Their Well-being**: Artists often face challenges with their mental health, so having support services like counseling and healthcare available can make a big difference.
By doing these things, we can create a better environment where artists can thrive, share their creativity, and contribute to our communities in meaningful ways.
