We were lucky to catch up with Ruben Resendez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ruben, thanks for joining us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
I believe that there are no such things as coincidences and everything happens for a reason at the perfect timing. It might not seem like it at the time but when you look back it, it was all in perfect timing. My initial adventure into entrepreneurship was as a self employed financial advisor living on 100% commission. I didn’t fully understand the mindset nor did I have my core values in place to really make it as a self employed individual. The timing was not right for me at that time in my life. Once my son was born and I couldn’t play around with my life anymore living on 100% commission I went and got a job at an internet marketing firm where I found my passion and what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Once I was fired from my job it was at the perfect timing when my only responsibility was providing for my son and myself. At the time it didn’t seem like the right time as I lost my home, moved back in with my parents, and went on food stamps to provide for my son and I but if it were not for that experience then I would have never went all in to starting a business with so much hunger to make something great happen. All these years later I would not change a thing about my experience as I now run a company doing over $25M in yearly revenue and all of those embarrassing moments are far in the distant past.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Ruben Resendez is the founder and President of the fastest growing education lead generation firm, adHere, Inc., in the US. adHere helps universities and colleges in the US find prospective students that are interested in attending their schools. adHere has over 20 full time employees and over 20 contractors but it all started with Ruben as a sole founder of the company.
Ruben is a first-generation entrepreneur that comes from a disadvantaged background. No one in his family ever built businesses or even attended college before him. He grew up in a middle-class family on the east side of San Jose, which many would say is the wrong side of the tracks. He has been on food stamps and is most proud of building his business as a single father. Ruben started his business with $300 of his own money and bootstrapped it to now being listed by Inc Magazine as the fastest growing company in America. He is now on a mission to inspire others to look at his situation that he came from and realize that they can make their dreams and goals come true as well.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I got fired from my job I decided to go all in on building a business and doing whatever it took to make it work. At the point when my unemployment checks stopped 6 months after getting fired, and losing my house, as well as having to move my son and I in with my parents I came to a crossroads where I needed to have a paycheck coming in fast since the business was not producing enough for me to live and still provide for the team members I brought on at that time. It was at this crossroads that I started entertaining the option of going back to a job temporarily while still working on getting the business to make enough money to provide for myself and my team members. I was in the final round of interviews with a company that was going to pay me a salary of 6 figures a year when I mentioned to them that I was also building a business on the side. That is when they said that I would need to dissolve the business if they were going to hire me. It was at this point where I needed to make a decision and that is when I decided to deny their offer and go all in to building the business and going as low as I could go financially until I built the company well enough to pay for my living expenses. This meant that I wouldn’t even have enough money to pay for my son and I to eat so we went on food stamps to help us survive. Even at this lowest point I still did not give up because I knew that I was pointed in this direction for a reason and I was meant to build something great. It was after this situation that I started figuring it out and scoring bigger clients for the business and started figuring out how to pay myself as well as my team members. It was at this point that everything started turning around and even to this day it has been getting better and better every single day.
Have you ever had to pivot?
When I found out I was going to be a Dad over 14 years ago I was living on 100% commission as a self employed financial services professional. I only had $500 to my name, it was the year 2008 during the great financial crash at the time, and I had no idea where my next paycheck would come from. I thought I was going to be in the financial industry for the rest of my life but when I found out I was going to be a Dad that is when I knew I needed to pivot and get a job. That is when I was introduced to the industry of internet marketing and found my passion which combined my love of technology and the psychology of communication. If it weren’t for my son being born and pushing me to pivot in my career then I would have never knew about this industry or even started a business in this industry.
