Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ruben Montes. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Ruben thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I started this dog training business because there was something missing in order to help dogs and their owners who were struggling. After seeking help for my tough dog we kept getting met with people who could not help. Trainer after trainer we kept struggling. I started to notice holes. Being the driven person I am I continued to search for answers on how to help my dog. Through this journey friends and family started to take notice and then dog training was something that started to show up more and more.
After college and no real prospects I started to look at opening my own dog walking business. This morphed into helping people and their harder dogs.
My mission is to give people hope and let them know that their can be helped and they can live better with their dogs no matter what they are struggling with. It was my mission to fill the gap I saw in the dog training community here in Portland.
Ruben, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Ruben Montes and I got into this industry after adopting a dog that had a few more issues that I was not equiped to handle. After hiring other professionals and not being to get help I sought the answers myself. We offer training for people who have both easy or tougher dogs. Ones that some trainers may not even bring through the door. We can help those who are stuck. We offer board and train and private lesson programs. We take a compreeehensive approach that looks at the whole dog and not just obedience commands.
We are most proud of our ability to show people what their dog is capable of. Often times, when people are in the struggle it is hard to see that their dog is not a lost cause. We want our potential clients to understand that getting better behavior from our dogs is not just on the dog but on us too. We will help you to understand your dog better.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built our social media presence by posting about the dogs in our care. We would post daily, sometimes multiple times a day. We would share success stories, tips, training exercises. We followed a lot of advice from people like Gary V. For those starting out I would suggest just to post. I think sometimes we can spend too much time trying to make the perfect post when it would just be good to post. Think of problems you clients have and make content around that. Tell them about yourself. It is not always about what you do.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Some books that were really helpful were leadership books from Jock Willink. Reading personal development books from Darren Hardy, Ryan Holiday, Seth Godin, Tom Deblass, David Goggins, Marcus Aubrey, and Jim Rohn. Also seraching out people in my industry and listen to their podcasts to get more insight in how they operate their business’s
