We recently connected with Ruana Rae and have shared our conversation below.
Ruana , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I am currently in the process of earning a living doing what I am passionate about. Ever since I was a child I dreamed of making clothing, painting and just being creative as a full time job. I used to tell myself that I want to create just for me and no one else since that is what makes me the happiest, but I know now that was never the case. From the moment I decided to take commissions for costumes and share what I make with others I knew I made the right decision. It’s a tremendous leap of faith going out on your own as a creative but having the support from my family, friends, and the community has been amazing.
From the first day I announced I was opening up my commissions to others in the burlesque community, the response was overwhelmingly positive. I initially was unsure that my skills were enough for others, since I am entirely self taught,
I don’t think I could have sped up the process, it felt like the right time to do so. My sewing skills and drive to learn to make new things have improved over the past few years.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I created Azurite Designs back in 2020 as a means of getting my leather goods on etsy, since then it has morphed into so much more.
I have been sewing since I was a child on and off but never to the degree I am today. Four years ago I started my burlesque career and discovered my love for sewing all over again. I create props, elaborate costumes, alter existing costumes, and teach others how to sew. I also designed 3D printed sewing notions, rhinestone trays, and pasties. I help others transform skirts, dresses, and corsets into dynamic reveals, constantly trying to figure out new and interesting ways to have the pieces come off. I also work with other performs on converting store bought or thrifted items into fully functioning pieces on a budget. My goal is to make creating costumes more accessible for others and allow them to express themselves through sewing and creating.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of what I do is seeing the pieces I create on stage, and how much others love them. It’s someone coming back to me saying I did this because of what you showed me. There’s nothing better then fueling someone else’s creativity.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Many don’t realize the time it takes to create the pieces or alter them. The hours it takes to take apart a dress to then sew it into a custom fitted panel skirt, top, and arm drapes. The hours of trial and error, watching videos, and fine tuning skills.
