We recently connected with Roz Browne and have shared our conversation below.
Roz, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
This question is always one I think most creatives deal with. For me one day I can be totally happy at where I am in my career. Then on another day I’m questioning why did I ever get into this business. Acting and Stand Up comedy is not for the faint of heart. Looking at it from the outside, it can look glamorous and attractive. But those in the inside know the struggle it takes to maintain a positive outlook in the face of so many Nos. The best teacher and coach I had was Gary Austin. He was the founder of the famous Groundlings Improv Theater. I remember he would have us do this exercise where we would go onstage and perform our act. The students in the audience were instructed to boo at the person on stage. When I first did it, I thought hmmm.. That’s not very nice but the longer I stood on that stage the more I was okay with not getting the approval from the audience. I realized that my purpose was more than getting likes from the audience.

Roz, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a former certified public accountant who switched career to become a stand up comedian and actress. Since 2001, I have been performing regularly at all the major comedy clubs in Los Angeles and nationwide. I was the first comedian to perform on the Laugh Factory stage at the Tropicana Resort in Las Vegas and was taught by Groundlings founder Gary Austin. My name is on the wall of the legendary Comedy Store in Hollywood. I’m proud of that.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think the most important thing society can do to support artists and creatives is by attending live performances, going to the the stand up clubs, theaters and plays. With all of the streaming channels that we have now it can sometimes be a struggle to get people to come out and attend live events.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is seeing the joy of laughter on the faces in the audience. Laughter is healing and knowing that I can help in anyone in their healing makes the journey worth while.
