We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Roz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Roz below.
Roz, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
As difficult as the music industry is, I truly can’t picture my life doing anything besides music. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do. I tried to force a different path when I was younger and I was never happy, I never gave it my full effort and all I thought about was music. I have heard for years that I should find a “real” job but the reality is is that I am super lucky to have found a way to pay all of my bills doing something that I truly love, something that truly makes me happy and I think that’s something that’s pretty rare. I’ve thought about what happens if I don’t get past the point I’m at in my career and what I would do after it’s all over and still, to this day, I cannot picture anything besides music.

Roz, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Roz, I’m the lead singer of a pop country band called The Curves based in Nashville TN but I’m originally from Orleans, ON. Much like most musicians, I’ve been doing this since I can remember. I played every talent show, sang in every choir and performed on every stage I could find since I was in elementary school. After highschool it was recommended that I go to university by everyone around me because that’s what you’re “supposed” to do – and I did just that. I studied at the University of Ottawa thinking I would be a doctor. I worked multiple jobs to pay for school and that’s when I started playing the bars around town. That’s when I first realized that this could be what I do for a living. I sang everywhere I could and started to write my own music and dreamed about moving to Nashville to chase an incredibly crazy dream. I didn’t know how I would make that a reality but I saved the skyline as my desktop throughout university and did everything I could to get there. Throughout this time I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to sing at NHL games, festivals, fundraisers and my song was used by the Canadian Blood Services OneMatch program to raise awareness and support stem cell research. I participated in Canadian Idol and other competitions trying everything I could to get noticed by this crazy industry. Once I graduated I packed all of my things in my car, gave my degree to my parents and started my first trip to the US, playing gigs all the way down to Miami. I lived in Walmart parking lots most of the time to save on costs. I would sign up for trial passes at gyms so I could workout and shower and that was the first time I came to Nashville on my own. I loved it. I knew it was where I was supposed to be. So I drove back home and found a way to make that a reality. I moved to Nashville not knowing anyone. I would play open mic nights and make jokes about not knowing anyone and asknig for friends – it actually worked! haha I started writing everyday and eventually started playing the bars on Lower Broadway for tips – just like you hear in all of those country songs. I thought I was going to be a solo artist but this town is filled with talent and my path took a turn when I met a talented producer in town looking to develop a female-lead band. Together we put the group together and we have been putting out music for the past two years. It was a slow start because we formed right before Covid shut everything down but we are really starting to move now. We are known around town for our very high energy shows. Our goal is to have everyone leave saying “wow that was fun”. We have a bunch of new music coming out this summer and we are so excited to get on the road playing original shows soon.
In regards to what i’m most proud of, I would say my resiliancy and my ability to put what everyone told me I should do to the side and really go after what makes me happy and what I love. I find it so crazy that I get to drive by that skyline that I had saved on my computer every day and it’s actually my home now. Even though this industry can absolutely break you down, I truly can’t imagine doing anything else with my life and I’m super lucky to have my husband, family and friends completely behind me now. On the days I feel like giving up, they help me push through and get back on stage and into the writing room. This town and this industry is filled with incredible highs and lows and it’s all part of the journey and all a part of the fun!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I am lucky to get to play for hundreds, if not thousands of people every week. I meet people from all walks of life and I think my favourite thing about that and what’s the most rewarding to me is truly connecting with them. Music is a beautiful language that brings us all together and it’s incredibly powerful. We receive messages all the time about how being at our show turned a rough time for someone into an amazing night or a celebration that they’ll never forget. People come back with photos from times they saw us years ago and stories about how great of a time they had etc. There’s no better feeling than looking out into a huge crowd of people and knowing that for that time, we are all there to do one thing – have a great time and make some wonderful memories. I get to lead that and be a part of it every weekend and that’s a really wonderful thing.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I’m no social media mogul, but we’ve done alright for ourselves since starting this band. What we always focus on is making sure our videos show the REAL us. We are goofy and fun and like to laugh and we want our audiences of any kind to see that. It’s super easy to just jump on the train of what’s happening and what’s going viral at that moment, and that’s cool and we understand it, but we want people to really get to know us and I think that goes a long way in the social media world. I know I like to follow people that feel genuine and real. People who aren’t just showing the highs, people who I feel like I want to be friends with. I think that’s something that everyone can add into their social media presence no matter what field you’re in. Be you. Authentically. People will recognize that and it will attract the ones that really do support you.
