We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Royce Dixon Sr. a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Royce thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
I got started when my wife and I went through a divorce in 2011. We had been married for 18.5 years with the last 2 being really rough. Not speaking to each other unless out in public and home we were like 2 ships passing in the night. Eventually she asked me if I wanted a divorce and I said yes, I think I do. Not because of another women or anything like that. In my head I wanted to stop both of us from hurting and I thought this would be best.
Now here we are standing in front of the judge in a court room where I normally work and he asked if we wanted to stop the process. My wife is crying and doesn’t answer so I said yes. Inside it was tearing me apart but my pride stepped in and said proceed. This happened 3 times and yet we went through the process. It hurt me to my heart and I knew I was making a mistake however my pride wouldn’t let me stop it. I knew I still loved her but I didn’t want to keep hurting her or myself.
Fast fwd 6 months later we are back together starting over as friends and dating like we once did before. Eventually we got remarried on the same exact day we were originally married on in 2013.
Three years later I decided that I wanted to write a book about what we went through so that we could help others not to make the same mistakes that we did. Getting married at 20 with 2 kids and going through a worlwind of bad decisions,
Writing Blessed While Broken was the start of it all and I have been writing every since. Along with starting our own clothing line and a Photography business.

Royce , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My 8-5 job is being a bailiff at the Winnebago County Courthouse. I’m also an award winning Author, Photographer and Clothing designer.
Our mission is simple. We are blessed to be a blessing to others. So that looks different to different people in different situations. We do this through our clothing line spreading the message, through church, the books, even the photography business.
One of the things I want people to know about me is that I’m a servant first. Everything I do I make sure GOD is in it.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
After our divorce, I tried to get back with my wife Lisa and she didn’t want to even talk to me. She told me that we couldn’t be friends nothing. We nothing to talk about outside of our kids.
She rejected everything I tried, everything I said. She wanted nothing to do with me. Every time she rejected me I kept coming back. I knew this was the love of my life and I couldn’t give up.
God kept speaking to me and reminded me that with all the pain I caused her , I had to learn what it was like to be rejected as well. It was a tough lesson but it taught me resilience

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I met the cofounder and business partner at a birthday party for her cousin. We danced and hung out for the rest of the night. After that we would talk on the phone for hours. After that she had moved to California for about a year.
Then by chance we saw each other at a local restaurant and from then on we’ve been together for over 30 years
