Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Roya Adjory . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Roya, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
When I graduated from high school in 1977 I was sent to the USA to continue my education since there was a revolution taking place in my own country of Iran . Early on I had a strong inclination to art and creativity but since my family were paying for my college education , it pretty much had to be what they wanted my major to be so I ended up with a business degree and not an art degree . In my mid 30’s I ended up living in the city of Paraty in Brazil . This city housed many artists from around the globe who found home in this cozy colonial town .
Being surrounded with artists , I could no longer live with myself if I did not peruse my art so when I returned back to the US I declared myself as an artist and began my art making process which involved many art classes , art residencies and variety of art exhibition around town .
Roya, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have always possessed a great affinity to nature , thirst for knowledge, and a deep appreciation of beauty in all its forms . My belief in the fundamental unity of all cultures and peoples has led me to create art pieces that I hope reflect the depth of our collective souls , the beauty of our beings and the ability to expand to fully embrace our lives .
I have always been a multi disciplinary artist with great interest in all kinds of materials . Love exploring different mediums and themes to stay fresh and engaged . I am often preoccupied with ideas that challenges my notions and expressions of freedom .
I live in the question of how do I make a difference in my families , communities , country and the world at large and what I am left with these days is my ability to create art pieces that are visionary in nature . Honoring my own need to express via this medium and manifesting art pieces that others connect to is my contribution .
Having had a personal experience of healing much childhood traumas via my art has convinced me that Art heals and most recent science acknowledges and proves this point .
I am and have been interested in creating art that is transformative and transcendental in its themes and content . I define these types of art works as any performing or visual art that evokes a higher state of consciousness. It seems to me based on my own personal experiences , once one touches upon such a state , there arises a greater understanding of oneself , humanity , nature , the cosmos and their interdependence .
If I am able to create such art pieces and it results in one person only receiving it , I would feel I have succeeded .
My most recent collection of paintings are on display at the upcoming Open Studio of Topanga on October 7 -8
This series is dedicated to all the women of Iran and their struggle for freedom of expression which I do not take for granted .
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
In the last 30 years of my painting career which has been mostly part time along with my job , I have taken many art classes , studied with few people . Nothing has had an impact in my practice more than the Creative Visionary program I signed up for in May of this year . This program was founded by an artist himself Nicholas Wilton . This 3 months intensive program like no other integrated everything I have learned and done up till this point in my life . It gave me the container to explore what makes my art mine and own it and gave me tremendous confidence in what I already know . Most artists specially on Instagram or anywhere else are not willing to share techniques , ideas and principals to help solve problems in one’s art but this visionary program did it all and more . I am forever grateful .
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Like I mentioned before I am mostly interested in doing art that has a positive impact in the viewer’s psyche. My goal is to create art that is visionary in nature given the times we live in , there is a great need to evoke parts of ourselves that sees and feels the interconnectedness of all things . I am driven to create Art works that reflect our collective need for beauty , balance , and harmony . More than ever , times we live in forcing us to see and feel our interconnectedness and all the ways we affect each other . Art in all its forms has the ability to connect us to our essence and invite us to see and feel the unseen .
