Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Roy Duprez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Roy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
A series of events lead to an epiphany of sorts. I have been working with at-risk youth for a long time, and I introduced them to a program we developed. It was an experiential theme as opposed to just doing regular classroom activities for at-risk youth. I felt that many kids learn differently and want something more hands-on. Seeing how much kids benefited from those hands-on experiences taught me that kids need various types of learning, and I applied that approach when developing Back2Basics.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We are a small 22-bed Residential treatment center for substance abuse and alcoholism in Flagstaff, Arizona. We specialize in helping young adult men through a hybrid of outdoor expeditions and traditional therapy. We are a three to six-month program, and we have longer stays because we feel like it has more of an impact in helping people not only treat substance abuse but build on their life skills. We introduce them to possibilities and show them what successful recovery can look like.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
This is a tough job in a tough industry. You have to believe in what you are doing because it gets complicated. You have the ability to impact someone’s life for their own improvement, but you have to be ready for the reality that not everyone will make it. When people fail, it can be extremely tough on you mentally, but pushing through also leads to seeing people succeed and live fulfilling lives post-treatment. Resilience in this industry is creating a team and finding people who are united in your message of treatment.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
I can’t even think about where my life would be if I made a different decision. I am so blessed and I have a platform to be of service and a community to help me do so.
