We were lucky to catch up with Roxanne Flett recently and have shared our conversation below.
Roxanne, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
One of the most exciting trends I’ve been observing as a home décor influencer and DIY home improvement creator is the resurgence of personality-driven spaces, particularly through color drenching and wallpaper. Both trends are breathing new life into home design, offering ways to make spaces feel more intentional and reflective of individuality.
I embraced color drenching in my husband’s office makeover by painting the walls and trim in a bold, moody shade. I decided to stain the doors instead of painting them to add even more warmth, which complemented the deeper tones of the room. The ceiling was left neutral to highlight the beams I later added, which brought texture and architectural interest to the space. This approach resulted in a room that feels cohesive, dramatic and thoughtfully designed, proving that color drenching can create depth and character without overwhelming the overall aesthetic.
For wallpaper, I’ve loved showcasing its versatility and impact through projects like my bathroom water closet and office makeovers. In the water closet, I used a white wallpaper with a delicate gold floral outline, adding elegance and subtle charm to the small space. For my office, I chose a bold floral wallpaper that brought warmth and sophistication, transforming the room into a creative yet refined workspace. Both projects highlight how wallpaper can infuse a room with character and create an impactful design moment, whether in smaller spaces like my water closet or larger ones like my office.
The plus side of these trends is that they provide an incredible opportunity for homeowners to express their individuality and make bold design choices. For DIY enthusiasts, they open the door to exciting projects like experimenting with wallpaper or embracing unconventional color combinations. On the downside, bold design choices can feel overwhelming for some, especially when committing to such dramatic changes. Mistakes can also be costly if not executed properly, making it essential to approach these projects with careful planning, which is why I’m passionate about sharing my projects to help guide others confidently through their transformations.
Ultimately, these trends offer a fresh canvas for creativity, whether you’re updating a single wall or reimagining an entire space. I’m excited to see how they continue to inspire homeowners and look forward to exploring them further in my own projects.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My love for decorating began with holiday décor and soon grew into a passion for transforming entire spaces. This passion led me to start a home staging business, where I applied my skills in creating beautiful, functional spaces and before I knew it, I had won multiple awards for my work. After relocating to Texas, I saw it as the perfect time to expand beyond staging and share my passion for home design in a new way. That’s how Roxy Home Living came to be and it has given me an incredible opportunity to share my passion with the world while inspiring others with practical, stylish solutions for transforming their homes.
What sets me apart is my background in home staging, which has shaped the way I approach DIY projects and home décor. In home staging, every detail, no matter how simple, can completely transform a room. I bring that same mindset to DIY, where I focus on creating polished, beautiful results through hands-on work. Whether it’s a small update or a larger renovation, I share the finished product and guide my audience through the process, empowering them to make their own transformations.
I’m most proud of some of the bigger projects I’ve taken on, such as my complete kitchen makeover, where I extended the cabinetry to the ceiling, recreated the desk area in the breakfast nook into a buffet and made use of unused space. I also laid my flooring without any prior experience! I’ve even learned electrical skills along the way, enabling me to change light fixtures and outlets. These projects, along with the skills I’ve acquired, required a lot of research, planning and trial and error, but they’ve become milestones I’m incredibly proud of, showcasing my commitment to transforming a space from start to finish, no matter the challenge.
One thing I want potential followers to know is that I’m genuinely passionate about helping others create spaces that feel complete and reflect their personal style. Whether through DIY projects, home décor tips or holiday styling, my goal is to share content that empowers my audience to embrace their creativity and make their homes uniquely their own. I believe that with the right inspiration and some guidance, anyone can transform their space in a way that makes them feel proud and connected to it…and that’s why I’m here!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
A significant pivot in my journey came during the early days of COVID-19. As a home stager, I was used to working closely with clients and transforming spaces in person. But when the pandemic hit, the nature of my business changed almost overnight. With restrictions in place, stagers were no longer able to enter people’s homes and the entire industry had to adapt quickly.
Rather than seeing this as a setback, I saw it as an opportunity to shift my focus and lean into what I loved most – interior design and sharing my creative process with others. Content creation became the perfect outlet to channel my passion for transforming spaces, even if I couldn’t do it in person. With so many people spending more time at home, I knew there was a growing need for inspiration and guidance when it came to home décor, DIY projects and creating spaces people could feel connected to. That’s when I decided to start sharing my knowledge and experiences online.
The transition wasn’t easy, but it felt like the right step. I embraced the challenge of building an online presence and was able to use the skills I had gained through my home staging business to connect with a wider audience. It was through this pivot that I created Roxy Home Living and began to share not only my home improvement projects but also the inspiration that I had always been passionate about.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
A moment that truly tested my resilience came when COVID-19 hit, and as a home stager, my business came to an abrupt halt. With restrictions preventing me from entering clients’ homes, it felt like everything I had worked for was suddenly at risk. But rather than letting the situation overwhelm me, I found a new way to channel my energy. I realized that my love for interior design and creativity could still thrive, just in a different form.
I shifted my focus to content creation, something I had always wanted to pursue but hadn’t yet fully embraced. This was a leap into uncharted territory and there were many obstacles along the way, such as learning new platforms, adapting to a digital audience and figuring out how to share my design expertise in a way that felt authentic. But through perseverance and staying true to my passion, I built a new outlet where I could still inspire, educate and connect with people.
In a way, I feel lucky that this challenge pushed me to lean into something I love even more. What I learned through that pivot is that resilience isn’t just about pushing through difficult circumstances, it’s about adapting, embracing change and finding new ways to grow. I’ve been able to continue creating and helping others transform their spaces, even in the face of unexpected challenges.
