We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Roxana Staggs a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Roxana, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
My passion for beauty and wellness dates back to my childhood, I grew up in Venezuela, a country with a culture of beauty contests and pageants, due to the delicate political situation in my country I was forced with my parents to leave to the United States and start a new life from scratch, with very little but with a lot of desire, I worked cleaning and being a waitress, until I finally had the opportunity to study and with a lot of effort to prepare myself, but the big push did not happen until after I got married, life took an unexpected turn when my pregnancy was interrupted at 28 weeks and my baby was born weighing only 1lb 9oz, after 6 months in the hospital and a change that I never expected, I had become a medical mom, which pushed me even more to pursue my passion, to go for it, went to school at night and to be a medical caregiver during the day for my baby, and then work on the weekends, that’s how I opened my own company and got my esthetician license, the ideal of working different hours did not allow me to get a typical 9-5 job forced me to work even harder and make a reality of what is now Fit & Chic Wellness Studio, body sculpting, rejuvenating facials, wax, brows and of course my professional nutritional guidance to achieve the best version of yourself, Latina owned aimed at all the women of Greenwood, Indiana!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Who is Roxana Staggs? A Venezuelan entrepreneur with a degree in aesthetics CEO of Fit & Chic Wellness Studio, who after having a life planned in Venezuela, the delicate socio-political situation brought me here, betting on a country full of opportunities and with a lot of diversity. Beauty and aesthetics are deeply rooted in my culture, from my country, where we grow with it, with a lot of effort and starting a life from scratch, I got the tools to study. I am a mother with a baby with medical needs this guide me to achieve medical knowledge including my Home Health Aide license, and also Certified Nutritional Coach, being a medical caregiver pushed me to study at night and work different hours while managing my time for my baby’s medical care, inspired me to try harder and specialize even more: Licensed Esthetician and Certified Body Sculpting technician, coming from a diverse family Venezuela-Portugal, the Spanish and the Portuguese language knowledge helped me gain more experience taking courses with Brazilian, Venezuelan and Colombian techniques, for body sculpting, cavitation, Radio-Frequency, facial Wood Therapy, rejuvenating and anti-aging facials, brow design, lamination and wax, I especially love combining my knowledge in nutrition to help my clients achieve incredible results on body and face that I apply on myself and that have given proven results on my clients and of course they can see reflected in me!

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Someone once told me: if you don’t know what to do, then try everything. The beauty industry is a ver competitive field but it’s very important to remember, you are UNIQUE, which means there’s always people out there looking for YOU! If you connect with the right people/audience word of mouth would be your best ally!
If you don’t feel comfortable with anything in your field then you are projecting your business to the wrong target/audience, never it’s too late to make changes, don’t stop trying!

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
After starting my journey in the beauty field, I was studying of my free time and working full time, no rush. Until my pregnancy took an unexpected turn, the ultra-premature birth of my son led me to stop working/studying for over 10 months. Once my baby was home after 189 days at the hospital took me months to find a way on how to manage his medical care and to continue studying what I know it’s my passion, there will always be a way, but if its worth it then it won’t be easy!
