Roxana, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
Naming my bakery was not hard at all for me, I quickly knew what I wanted and am beyond proud that it is so original. My husband, our dog and I are a small family of immigrants. I am Romanian and my husband is Turkish. We call ourselves Roturks and that’s where the name comes from. I will admit many ask me to repeat it when they first hear it but once they know the story behind it it’s so easy to remember it and that’s what makes it so special!
Roxana, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I developed a curiosity and passion about baking professionally after I made our dog’s first layered birthday cake! It turned out very successful haha and cute. Our rescue, Rajah, approved! I’ve always baked desserts for family and friends but never thought I could do this professionally. I later made a mousse cake for my husband’s birthday and was so proud of it I started showing photos at work. A colleague’s birthday was coming up and she asked me to make her birthday cake. I made her a chocolate champagne mousse cake and she absolutely loved it. Now the champagne flavor it’s a fan favorite! Shortly after, friends, colleagues and family encouraged me to open my own bakery. My biggest supporter has been my husband and I could not thank him enough for all the love and encouragement he’s given me through this journey. I created my professional instagram account @roturks_bakehouse in 2023 and got my cottage food license. I wanted the taste of my desserts to be different and I learned how to work with chocolate. My cakes and cupcakes are made with high quality Belgian chocolate ganache and don’t have any added sugar. The most common question I get about my desserts is what was the frosting made out of because it tasted so delicious and different. Miss World America tasted my cupcakes at a 4th of July party and wrote to me afterwards saying “I felt like I tasted a piece of HEAVEN”. The most I love about what I do is the finishing touches decorating the cakes and cupcakes and most importantly the feedback I receive from my clients. When I hear back about how much they loved my desserts and how it contributed to their happiness on their special day, that’s truly what makes every minute of labor worth it!
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Since I started my business to this day, word of mouth has been the most successful in gaining new clients. I advertise my bakery via Instagram the most and it’s the main platform of business for me. Instagram generated a few client orders as well so far. The best about the social media platform is that I can add behind the scenes content so people get a glimpse of how I’m making desserts and the process before the end flawless product. People can scroll around or search and come across my page. Once they like what they see and read my clients reviews they trust me with their next event dessert. In the beginning I definitely had a few giveaways that brought me loyal customers. Some did not but that is okay and I hope they truly enjoyed them! My advice, be a fighter and never give up your dreams!
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I never compromise quality! I use the best ingredients I can find, most organic, I support local and if I’m not pleased with it I start over until the final product is to my satisfaction. I make everything that goes into my desserts at home with care and love. I am always treating people with respect and patience regardless if the order goes through or not. As a social worker by day I have always worked in customer service and understand how important it is to be treated with kindness and respect.
