We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Roxana Becerril a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Roxana, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
In my senior year of high school, my AP English class was tasked with a final project: writing a reported feature on any topic related to the local community. We were reading Tom Wolfe, Joan Didion, and other writers of the new journalism era at the time. They way they told a story, a real one, too, in such a vivid way, all while teaching the audience about a historical time, was fascinating. In my eyes, at least. Taking that style of writing as my inspiration, I wrote about a youth center where teenagers dealing with substance abuse, domestic violence, and other issues sought help. Talking to people, hearing their stories, and then putting those thoughts and facts into words ignited a fire within me. I think that was the a-ha moment in which I realized I wanted to pursue a career in writing.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m a bilingual journalist and writer covering art, lifestyle, travel, Latino news, and other topics in English and Spanish. I take on all types of assignments. One day I could be at an event, writing about what’s new in the city. Other times, I’m interviewing business owners for a marketing column printed in the Sunday paper. It depends on the assignment, publication, and client. I offer writing and editing services. My ability to tell relevant, eye-catching stories of value is what sets me apart from the rest.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being a writer during a time in which print is (arguably) dying, and videos are becoming the main source of entertainment and even news, it’s hard gauging whether or not your work is being appreciated or at times, even read. I’d say the moments in which I receive feedback — good or bad — and comments about how my articles have positively impacted the subject are probably the most rewarding.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I have a lot of goals to achieve! Said every Capricorn, ever. But if I had to pick just one, it’d be to reach a larger audience who sees the value in reported writing and journalism.
