We were lucky to catch up with Rowa Musings recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rowa, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
For me, some of the most meaningful projects I’ve done have been through collaborative efforts working with other amazing creatives. This past August I released my 3D universe ‘The ROWAVERSE’ in conjunction with one of my singles “Low Jewel”. This project took over a year to complete and was a collaboration with a talented 3D designer and artist named Vinyl Williams.
For me, my 3D universe has been one of my biggest personal accomplishments because it is really on the pulse of cutting edge 3D art and AR/VR technology and concepts. I conceptualized my own personal universe, a surreal landscape comprising of 3 specific areas which feels like an other worldly dreamscape- a visual representation of the environments that inspire me and that I feel my music transports me to.
Ultimately this project was such a meaningful thing for me because Vinyl Williams and I truly had such an amazing experience working together throughout the entire year where we both had levels of creative freedom but he ultimately created such an amazing finished product of what I had originally conceptualized. I was so grateful for such a healthy collaborative experience… which can be truly quite hard to accomplish at times when working on creative projects with people.
I really hope you check out my 3D realm by either watching my ‘Low Jewel’ by ROWA music video on youtube or on the ‘ROWAVERSE’ tab on my site rowamusings.com
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My dad always played music, he was a punk rocker and worked at a big record store in San Francisco in the 80’s. Growing up he always had his own sort of man cave jam room, so he taught me my first piano and guitar chords at a very young age. I’ve simply kept writing music ever since. I’m a very logical minded person so I never thought pursuing a career in music was a very good idea haha. But once I got a taste for music production and orchestrating my own unique sound, it became so infectious to keep writing and producing music I can’t seem to stop haha.
About 5 years ago I started dabbling in music production and djing. Now I’ve had some success with finding paid work in my industry through making soundpacks for apps, commercial licensing and paid dj/performance gigs.
I’d say my strongest qualities are my music production and curation. I’ve had a long run of successful events I’ve curated for reputable locations such as SOHO House. Moving forward I’d love to have more commercial success with my music by obtaining some viral moments with my singles leading to more reputable live gigs and paid partnerships.
I think I have an incredible range of skillsets to add to any brand through my eye for design, ear for music and amazing curation abilities as a way to access unique in person creative marketing.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I used to live in New Orleans and when I lived there I had two live bands that had a sort of neo soul randb fusion vibe. I used to throw shows and not even my own friends would come to them. I felt super defeated and struggled immensely to keep my bandmates on task with rehearsals. I ultimately still got discovered by someone in the industry who gave me the opportunity for a recording deal.
I soon realized that I would lose creative control from this deal and I dropped it last minute and worked really hard for a few months to save up and move to LA to learn Ableton Software for music production. For me this really proved my resilience because I resisted the temptation for the classic recoridng contract because I knew I ultimately wanted to keep my personal creative integrity. Learning music production has been one of the best decisions of my life.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
My view on NFTs is that I wish I had made them when they were popping off. LOL. I actually have an NFT trading card collection that I illustrated… that I of course haven’t released. I’m really scatter brained so I’ll get really excited about an idea and then never get around to finishing it. This is reminding me to give it a shot.
