Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ross Kay. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Ross, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
Snap! Outfitters is set apart from other companies in the industry because we offer more custom work, everything is built by hand, and customer service and quality are our two top priorities. We are also one of the few, if not the only, company making truck campers on the East Coast – most others are in the Midwest or Western states. Snap! Outfitters started in 2017, making it one of the first of its kind in the industry!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Though the company started in 2017, my father and I purchased this business in March of 2021. I was working with Snap as a contract employee for the company as a welder/fabricator. Soon, we found out they were looking to sell the company – or shelve it – and so we decided it was a good fit for us to buy.
We create hand-fabricated, custom truck campers. We strive to offer high quality products, as well as high quality customer service – after all, our customers are the backbone of our company and we appreciate them more than they will ever know!
Owning a small business can be extremely difficult some days/weeks/months/years, but when we see the whole process through to when the customer gets it installed on their truck, it makes everything worth the struggles. Nowadays, there is a lot of competition in the industry, so every day can feel like we are slipping behind. Looking back, we have had the opportunities and ability to create things that other companies couldn’t or didn’t have a desire to.
Any fun sales or marketing stories?
We recently had the opportunity to build something we’ve never built before, all thanks to a customer who came to us with their idea and asked us to build it. Essentially, it is our truck camper design, but on a 5×8 cargo trailer. The 5×8 platform worked out perfectly for our design and we basically treated it like a truck bed, but built taller walls to accommodate. It also includes leveling jacks for uneven campgrounds, solar panels, full insulation on the inside, and full dry entry to the sleeping area/loft.
The customer was very happy with the outcome and told us that we made his vision a reality. That really made us feel great! Since finishing it and getting it to the customer, he has used it almost every weekend!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Being a small business owner in addition to being an introvert has its struggles. My wife handles all of our clients, but occasionally I do interact with them to answer any questions they have that Mandy does not feel comfortable answering. I also struggle with ADHD, and that can be very difficult depending on the day. Most days, I am hyper focused and have no issues, but dealing with burnout and executive dysfunction has its own difficulties.
Overall, I wouldn’t have it any other way!
