We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ross Cooper a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Ross thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
After working in various gyms and giving out loads of free advice I decided it was time to try my hand at training people using my own style and for myself. Be it in a gym, online, or group setting its much more rewarding to be able to help people that I handpicked, that I know I can be of service to as opposed to figuring out if I’m the right fit for anyone a fitness manager throws my way. My advice to those in the personal training biz is don’t spend so much effort trying to win the internet; win your neighborhood, your co-workers if you still work a regular job… mine the people right where you are.

Ross, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a personal trainer and like a lot of people in this profession it started with a passion of training myself, building a great physique, and in my case being healthy as I’m a Type 2 diabetic. Then after getting soooo many questions regarding how I built my physique it became a natural transition to want to help others. I’ve often heard that the thing you think about when you first wake up is your PASSION and I found that when I woke up the first thing I thought of was what/how I was going to train on that day followed immediately by how I could be of service to others with what I’m passionate about. I founded WSKI which is an acronym for We Stay Krushing It and each piece of that means something. ‘We’ means you have to do the work by yourself but never alone. Stay means you stay until the work is done. Krushing is in reference to your goals; don’t just beat the goal but KRUSH it. And ‘it’ is whatever your ‘it’ is… a better physique, better health, that promotion, more confidence. These tenets are translatable across different aspects of life.

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Not being in it for money. I know it sounds counterintuitive but chase the passion you have to help people not the money. If all you’re about is money then you may as well just work at a luxury gym and call it a day.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Again, it seems cliche but work with people you really want to work with which lends itself to the first point. The beauty of handpicking clients is you get to decide if this is someone that you can work with, that you can build not just rapport but get them to TRUST you. When I worked at a gym there were literally days I dreaded certain clients. Now? every client I take on is a Rockstar.
