We recently connected with Ross Buzzell and have shared our conversation below.
Ross, appreciate you joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
As ironic as this statement is, what it takes to be successful is patience, sacrifice and an unwillingness to give up. Since I’ve started writing five years ago, I’ve been waking up between four and five in the morning to make sure I get my words done for the day. I have a full time job and a family to take care of so I sacrifice sleep to pursue my dreams. Every year, over the last five years, my income from writing has doubled. If this keeps up I will surpass my day job in income within the next year.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into writing novels completely by accident. I moved out to California to act and write for film. A script of mine wine third place out of over three-hundred-thousand submissions and my judge said that I should start writing books. My wife found a writing group that was just around the corner from where we lived. I went, met a successful indie author and he took me under his wing, we’ve been partners ever since.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal as an author is to be able to make enough to support my family so my wife doesn’t have to work if she doesn’t want to and allows me as much time with my children as I want. My father was in the military, he was deployed a lot so I didn’t get to see him much, I don’t want that for my children.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What helped me build my reputation in the market is attention to detail and creating stories that are safe for kids to read while still being entertaining enough for adults. That allows me to have a larger consistent reading base and has helped its organic growth.
