We were lucky to catch up with Roslynn McKenzie recently and have shared our conversation below.
Roslynn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I got started as a life coach because I naturally enjoyed helping people walk through their journey. In the beginning, people would come to me sharing their story or what they were currently facing in their lives. I did not know why people felt so comfortable opening up to me and at times, pouring out their hearts.
After many encounters and exchanges with people, I became interested in becoming a life coach. I prayed and asked God for guidance and if becoming a life coach was part of His will for me. The Bible instructs us to write the vision and make it plain. I mapped out the path for gaining knowledge about my new endeavor and I went to work! I read articles, I followed other life coaches on social media, I kept perfecting my craft, by having conversations with those who reached out to me for assistance, as I continued to learn. I took courses to become a life coach and received my certification.
The courses were not difficult. The courses were similar psychology courses I took years ago and most of the techniques that I learned, I was implementing them. It just felt so natural! As I worked through the certification process, I researched platforms and landing pages, my website, how to write and create ebooks, and I conducted surveys to get an idea of how people like to engage.
After gathering that information and looking deeply into what was in front of me, I wrote out how I wanted my business to flow and operate. I plugged in the pieces to complete the puzzle. As time went on, I did have to shift things around for the flow of my business to make sense internally and externally (especially when I wanted to collaborate with vendors/investors).
I set up my business financial accounts and payment services and I applied for an LLC. Setting up the LLC was simple and once my business became active, I was so excited and thrilled! I hit the ground running! I had professional headshot pictures taken. I had my business stationery created, both digital and paper. I began to tell people about the services I offered and I left my contact information with them. I asked my current clients to share with their network to help me with exposure and they shared their testimony of how I was supporting them along their journey and they were pleased with the outcome.
Although my business is ever-changing and evolving, I am excited about the future of it.
Roslynn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As I’ve shared previously, I decided to move forward as a life coach because I recognized that there was a need. People need one another and in more than one way. I wanted to support people and help them as they navigated their lives, especially with our young adults, our young ladies.
We unfortunately live in a world where image seems to be everything. If you do not look like those you see on social platforms, one is made to feel inadequate, ugly, less than or poor, so forth and so one. Some young adults have tragically ended their lives due to low self-esteem and being bullied. If I can help change that, I am more than ready to.
I was bullied when I was a child. I was teased and bullied because I was dark-skinned and short. Experiencing that was difficult but I am grateful that my family poured their love into me and told me that I was beautiful and that the best love was inside of me. I had to love myself first and as long as I loved myself and I had their support, I was able to embrace my life more. I am able to stand proudly and boldy!
I wanted to make it my purpose and mission to help this generation of young ladies who may be bullied and dealing with low self-esteem or have a poor self-image of themselves. I want to also help our young ladies to present themselves as “young ladies.” I want to show them that they are worthy, beautiful, intelligent, and fully capable of achieving the goals they have set for themselves. I want them to see that they can be successful and strong without having to be half dressed or like “the world.” Their calling is higher, they just need guidance and I am here to help them step into greatness.
I am extremely passionate about the legacy of our young ladies, our culture, and the values that will be instilled in them. I would love to see them sow into others who will come behind them. My goal is to help our daughters to become well-rounded, confident, and strong women who will be amazing contributors to our communities and beyond.
I also assist women who are seeking to grow and develop themselves on a more personal level; spiritually, emotionally, and physically. The older we become, we have to put measures in place to increase our vitality, awaken our passion, reignite love, and embrace who we are as we walk into this new season of our lives. More specifically, the perimenopause stage.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been by word of mouth and also, being socially present. We are often influenced to try a product because someone shared their experience of the product with you. You believe that they are a reliable source and you trust their judgement. They gave their review of the product or service, which triggers us to decide if we will give it a try.
I shared that example because I want to show the power of using word of mouth. Being present is equally important. We live in a society where being present on social platforms increases your visibility and it does help with connecting and engaging with others.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
The way that I like to keep in touch with clients is by checking in with them via email or phone. Sometimes, I will mail a card to them. Mailing cards makes it more personal and it helps to build rapport with clients. Some like to send pastries, which is a nice touch!
I keep in touch with them by going out to lunch just to check in with them and their progress. I like to acknowledge their birthdays, anniversaries, and other special events. I also like to invite them to special events and workshops that I host.
