We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rosilynn Morris. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rosilynn below.
Rosilynn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
I didn’t go to school to run a business…I went to school to become a therapist. So when I decided to launch my private practice, Find Your Piece, the idea of becoming a business owner felt, well, terrifying. Sure, I had dreams of helping clients and building a practice where I could make a difference, but the logistics? That was a whole other animal.
The list of things I needed to figure out was endless—registering a PLLC, getting an EIN, building an online platform to showcase my work, selecting an electronic health record system, deciding whether to be private pay or accept insurance. And that’s just scratching the surface! My brain was constantly swirling with questions: What did it really mean to be a business owner? Was I ready for all this?
At first, I thought about joining an established group practice. After all, the business side was already in place—no need for me to reinvent the wheel. But after some serious soul-searching (and probably too much Googling), my gut was telling me to go for it on my own.
So, I jumped in head first. I downloaded every free checklist I could find on the internet. The 3-ring binder I created for myself quickly turned into an encyclopedia of to-dos—legal stuff, website checklists, SEO tips, therapy niche brainstorming, you name it. I had so much information that I was on the verge of going down a rabbit hole that could have swallowed me whole. But there was something exciting about it, too. A mix of fear, exhilaration, and a sense of possibility that told me I was on the right track.
While I’m still navigating the rollercoaster of business ownership, I’m thankful to have chipped away at that never-ending to-do list. It’s a work in progress, but I’m proud of myself for taking that leap of faith to get started. The journey might not be smooth, but it’s mine—and that’s the most rewarding part of all.
Rosilynn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Welcome to Find Your Piece, a healing sanctuary in Minnesota where your journey toward wholeness begins. I’m a trauma therapist dedicated to supporting teens and adults as they navigate the complexities of childhood trauma. My approach is grounded in helping you rediscover your inner strength through self-exploration, compassion, and curiosity. Together, we’ll work to nurture a kinder, more loving inner dialogue while fostering meaningful connections in your life.
I believe that every individual’s story is unique and multifaceted, shaped by cultural, racial, religious, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic contexts. My mission is simple: to help you reconnect with the vibrant, confident, and self-assured person you were always meant to be. Healing isn’t about quick fixes—it’s about addressing the root causes of your struggles and uncovering the patterns that keep you stuck. In our work together, we’ll also explore how generational trauma may be impacting your life today.
Since earning my Master’s degree in Clinical Social Work, my focus has been on the intersection of early childhood mental health and complex trauma. This specialization has deepened my understanding of how attachment issues, relational trauma, and generational patterns influence our sense of self, our relationships, and the way we interact with the world.
As a trans-affirming, culturally responsive, and social justice-oriented therapist, I provide a safe, inclusive space for you to explore how past experiences—whether abuse, neglect, or complex stress—have shaped your self-image, relationships, and worldview. My approach is both empathetic and grounded in a blend of wit, humor, and authenticity, allowing you to bring your whole self into our work.
My ultimate goal is not just to help you heal, but to show you that you are worthy of that healing. In our time together, we’ll uncover the beauty in your human experience and work toward a future where you feel whole, empowered, and truly yourself.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Before launching Find Your Piece, I had grand plans to accept every insurance under the sun—Health Partners, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Medical Assistance, Medicare, Cigna, United Healthcare… you name it. Having worked in community mental health before, where there were entire teams dedicated to handling insurance billing, I naively thought, “How hard could it be?” Well, turns out, it’s a massive headache.
What I quickly learned is that working with insurance means a third party gets to call the shots—not just on payment, but on your care. They decide how many sessions you can have based on a diagnosis, impose rigid rules about treatment timelines, and often delay payments. On top of that, there’s the constant battle of miscommunication between providers and insurance companies. Needless to say, I realized this was a can of worms I wasn’t ready to dive into.
So, I made a pivot: I shifted from an insurance-based model to private pay only. As a private-pay only therapist, I’m able to work directly for people, not their insurance company. Insurance often places restrictions on how many sessions you can have and the kinds of treatment you receive, which rarely aligns with the real, individual needs of the person sitting in front of me. By choosing a private-pay model, I can design therapy that truly fits people’s goals and preferences, without outside limitations.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
This is an area I’m still exploring and learning about. In addition to my website, I’ve made my practice and therapy services visible on therapist directories like Psychology Today and Inclusive Therapists. I’ve also pursued a vetting partnership with Foster Adopt Minnesota, an organization dedicated to supporting individuals and families within the foster care, kinship, and adoption communities. Another exciting partnership I’m in the early stages of is with The Black Liberation Fund, which provides financial assistance to BIPOC clients seeking therapy with a BIPOC provider. Since I’m still in the early stages of building my caseload and growing my business, I’m eager to see which of these avenues will most effectively connect me with the clients who can benefit from my services.
