We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rosieta Williams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rosieta, thanks for joining us today. How do you think about vacations as a business owner? Do you take them and if so, how? If you don’t, why not?
Yes, I love taking vacations even though it may be hard to do so as a business owner. I believe that it is very important to take vacations, because as a business owner, we forget about self care. We are just important as the business/businesses that we own.
Rosieta, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am originally from Wisner, La but now reside in Lewisville, Tx. I moved to Texas in 2019 after graduating cosmetology school. I started cosmetology school with plans of being a hairstylist since that’s what I had done most of my life, but once we got to the makeup section, it stuck with me and I never looked back. Without a plan, I moved to Texas and things went from there. I immediately started a job and gave myself 6 months to 1 year to leave my job and become a full time makeup artist. After 10 months of working, I took a leap of faith and signed a contract on my very first suite. This was one of the most joyful moments of my life. Not even a full month after, Covid hit and I was unable to run my business for several months. Luckily, I have an awesome support system that helped me through until I was able to open my suite back up. During my first full year as a makeup artist, I faced many challenges. I had no plan and didn’t know anyone but I knew that my passion was makeup and I was determined to get my name out there. I began to promote 24/7 and would makeup my face for content because I wasn’t getting any clients yet. So I posted on social media every single day. Consistency is so important when trying to get recognized. After about 6 months of posting everyday, I was given the opportunity to become a Crayon Cutie and that’s when the game changed for me. I will forever support and be thankful for Supa giving me the opportunity. Fast forward into 2021. Now I’m starting to get clients here and there, but things are still slow. Then around April, boom, business took off out of no where. I was receiving bookings every week/weekend. And now here we are in 2022 and I’m BOOKED & BUSY.
I believe what sets me apart from other artists is that I’m humble, thankful, professional, & motivational. I enjoy pouring into others what I have learned over the years because sometimes all a person needs is for someone to believe in them and their craft. I believe in everyone, but it is up to you to do the work. This industry will overtake you if you let it, but I am proof that you can be successful full time MUA and not work a job on the side. I wanted to give up so many times but God had other plans.
To my clients/potential clients, Welcome. I take pride in my work and I promise that you’ll love it here. Come see me.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been social media. I can’t stress that enough. Every business owner should utilize all social media platforms. It will give you so much exposure.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think what helped me build my reputation was my professionalism and customer service. No matter what the situation may be or what I have going on at the moment, I remain professional at all times, even if I disagree with the client.
