We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rosie Kim a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Rosie, thanks for joining us today. We’ve love to hear an interesting investment story – what was one of the best or worst investments you’ve made? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
I have a genuine passion for learning. So, I continually seek out opportunities to expand my knowledge while embracing a beginner’s mindset. During my college years, I stumbled into a 3D modeling course, and it turned out to be highly rewarding and beneficial in the long run.
Earlier this year, I enrolled in a stone carving class to integrate this skill into my sculpture work. Comprehending the history and contemporary aspects of craftsmanship fuels my creativity, allowing me to bridge the past and present. Even though you may think it’s unnecessary or useless, anything you experience will return back to you with a valuable lesson. It can lead to grand adventures when the time is right.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Rosie Kim, and I am a multi-disciplinary artist based in New York. My artistic journey has been profoundly influenced by a dynamic and international upbringing. Born in Daegu, South Korea, I spent over a decade living abroad before settling in Brooklyn, New York, where I currently live and create.
My abiding interest in diverse creative forms, including music, film, art, and design, organically led me to pursue a career in the arts. I studied Jewelry Design for my Bachelor’s degree at The Glasgow School of Art. However, I discerned that jewelry design, while rewarding, imposed certain limitations in terms of keeping pace with evolving trends, navigating the market, and fully unleashing my creative potential.
Driven by an unwavering commitment to my artistic vision, I made the pivotal decision to further my education by obtaining a Master’s degree in Fine Arts. This transition has afforded me the opportunity to explore a broader spectrum of artistic expression, with a focus on painting and sculpture. It has unleashed my creativity and allowed me to embark on a more expansive artistic journey, enabling me to engage with a broader and more discerning audience.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I’m exploring themes of intimacy, human connection, and the feminine, while also seeking the profound connections between the human body and the natural world in my work. I gather ideas from everyday items, elements of nature, and the human form, reshaping them into imaginative, abstract, and playful ways. Through this transformation, I visualize my perspective on desire and admiration, with a strong grounding in the profound cultural traditions of ancient Greece and Rome.
In a deeper sense, my artistic endeavors serve as a commentary on the ephemeral nature of existence, an exploration of intricate human emotions, and the complexities of desire. Through my work, I aspire to provoke thoughtful reflections on the cyclical nature of life, from its inception to its culmination, and sometimes even in reverse.
My mission is to spark discussions and contemplations surrounding the profound beauty inherent in ancient art, reinterpreting it into contemporary insights. I aim to offer audiences a distinctive outlook on our emotions and life experiences. By establishing a dynamic interplay between the past and present, I endeavor to transcend conventional chronological narratives.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One of the most prevalent insecurities among artists and designers is the fear of not measuring up to others in popularity. Often, I find myself comparing myself with others. So, I keep a mindset prioritizing creating art with enduring value rather than seeking immediate recognition.
Instead of fixating on the success and popularity of others, my focus is on producing art that stands the test of time, resonating with audiences for generations to come. When I encounter creative challenges or feel stuck in my work, I deliberately shift my attention to other activities, providing a mental break rather than dwelling on the problem. This approach helps me gain fresh insights and return to my art with renewed creativity and purpose.
In essence, my art represents an ongoing exploration of the tangible aspects of existence. My belief and enduring will make me bold and courageous even when I address any insecurities throughout my artistic process.
