Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Roshi Shafaie. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Roshi, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I was born in Iran, and when I was 12 years old, my mom, my brothers, and I fled to Germany as refugees during the Iran-Iraq war. We had to start over—new language, new culture, and an entirely new life. I went to school, earned a degree in computer science, and eventually moved to the United States in my 30s, believing in the idea that this was the land of opportunity. I built a life here, started a career in my field, got married, and became a mom.
But something was missing.
About eight years ago, I was introduced to Mary Kay—and to be honest, I wasn’t familiar with the brand at all. But once I tried the products and experienced the customer care, I was hooked. The quality, the affordability, the European-standard certification (which matters deeply to me as someone who grew up in Germany), and the personal touch of having a beauty consultant who truly listened—these things made a lasting impression.
Eventually, I realized that what drew me in wasn’t just the skincare. It was how it made me feel—seen, supported, empowered. And I wanted to pass that feeling on to other women.
That’s what led me to become a Mary Kay consultant. I wanted flexibility in my life, yes—but more than that, I wanted to build something that centered around helping women feel beautiful, confident, and cared for. My mission is about more than makeup. It’s about connection. It’s about creating space where women can feel empowered in their own skin, at any stage of life.
Coming from a background where I had to start over multiple times, I understand how transformative it is to feel supported and seen. That’s the heart of my work. I may work for myself, but I’m not by myself—I have an incredible network of women leaders who mentor and uplift each other, and I get to do the same for my customers every day.
Mary Kay gave me more than a product—it gave me a purpose. And I’m so honored to now share that light with others.

Roshi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
About Me & My Business
My name is Roshi, and I’m a Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant based in Maryland. I specialize in helping women feel confident, cared for, and radiant—both through personalized skincare and makeup solutions, and by creating genuine, heart-centered connections.
My journey into this business is rooted in transformation—my own and others’. I was born in Iran and moved to Germany as a refugee during the Iran-Iraq war when I was 12 years old. I learned a new language, adapted to a new culture, and pursued my education in computer science. Later, I moved to the United States in search of greater opportunity, built a career in tech, got married, and became a mom.
I discovered Mary Kay about eight years ago—and honestly, I had never heard of it before. But after falling in love with the high-quality products, the personal customer service, and the company’s values, I found myself drawn to something deeper. What began as a personal interest turned into a mission to help other women feel empowered and confident in their own skin, just as I had.
Today, I offer complimentary consultations, custom skincare routines, pampering experiences, and educational content to help women take control of their self-care with ease and joy. I bring the product experience directly to my clients—online, in person, or by delivery—with a personal touch and ongoing support.
What sets me apart is my approach: I treat each client like a friend. I don’t believe in pressure—I believe in presence. I listen, I guide, and I serve. Many of my clients are busy moms, women going through big life transitions, or individuals who just want a moment to pause and feel good about themselves again.
I’m especially proud of the relationships I’ve built—many of my clients have become close friends. I’ve helped teens struggling with acne find confidence, moms rediscover their glow, and even seniors feel radiant again with age-friendly skincare.
My business isn’t just about beauty—it’s about trust, education, and empowerment. Whether someone is brand new to skincare or just looking for a fresh start, I’m here to guide them gently and confidently, with integrity and care.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Consistency, care, and community. I’ve built my reputation not by pushing products, but by building trust—one conversation, one delivery, one pampering session at a time. I always strive to listen first, recommend with care, and follow through on what I say I’ll do.
I genuinely care about the women I serve, and I think people can feel that. Whether I’m helping a teen manage breakouts or supporting a neighbor through self-care, I’m not just selling a product—I’m creating connection. I also stay active in my community, support local events, and build relationships beyond transactions. That has helped my reputation grow naturally over time.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Absolutely. I was 12 years old when my family fled Iran during the war and sought asylum in Germany. It was a total life reset—new language, new culture, no stability. But I adapted, learned German, went to school, and earned a degree in computer science. Years later, I moved again—this time to the United States. Another reset.
It wasn’t always easy, but I’ve learned that resilience doesn’t mean never feeling fear or doubt—it means continuing to move forward despite it. That same mindset helped me build my Mary Kay business from the ground up, with no background in beauty, no client base, and lots of self-doubt. But I leaned into learning, into connection, and into my purpose.
Now, I not only run a thriving business, but I support others on their own paths to confidence—because I know what it means to rebuild, and I know the power of showing up for yourself again and again.
