We were lucky to catch up with Rosemary Hurwitz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Rosemary, appreciate you joining us today. Can you share an anecdote or story from your schooling/training that you feel illustrates what the overall experience was like?
It was on Loyola University’s campus, on a late chilly autumn day in the Windy City, Chicago. My youngest of four was in kindergarten and I was changing careers. It felt both awesome and a bit scary. It was exciting and freeing to pursue this career adventure and yet, i couldn’t help thinking Am I spending money here we might be needing for our kids for college? What will I really do when I’ve completed this graduate degree? I was in a Masters program for Spiritual direction and coaching. Feeling a bit unsure this particular day, I asked God, “ how can I do this sacred work with individuals in their inner growth journey, when I am just flawed like everyone else? Intuitively I “heard” a wierd almost biblical sounding statement, it was “I will put the words inside your mouth.” It was an “aha- I know this to be so deeply true” moment, the kind where you don’t need anyone’s vote or advice. You. Just. Know.
And I’ve held that answer close to my heart for 22 years as I’ve brought the Enneagram’s wisdom, enlightenment and empowerment to individuals, and companies across the US and Europe.
I trust if I keep learning from the best and varied teachers and if I learn other self mastery disciplines too like the intuitive process, I will be expressing or teaching from the best wisdom and guidance received here and from the divine realm too.
Divinity wants to be expressed through each one of us and I’m so grateful I answered that call.
Rosemary, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I always liked the psycho-spiritual field, even as an 8 year child I remember being a counselor to a friend. Many people told me I was good at “going deep” growing up, but I thought I wanted to be a singer, then a nurse. Really I was good at caring for others but when stress hit in college quitting a nursing program, I found my “core self” was not as strong as others my age. Our large family was enmeshed and our individuation wasn’t cultivated enough.
I had a breakdown break through experience in early adulthood that was pivotal to my careers. First in career coaching, then in mid life, Life Coaching.
Being Retreat Facilitators with my husband for a Marriage Encounter type Program for the engaged, for over twenty years gave me a love for
Inner work and personal growth too.
I’m most proud of heeding the call, doing the work with individuals. When their eyes shine with resonance of remembering who they are at their essence, it is worth gold. Writing my book which is in best selling status on Amazon made me proud too.
It took me a long time 11 years- in the field to feel competent enough to write it. The 9 other inspirational anthology books that I wrote chapters in developed my confidence to be a solo Author too. I love the studies writing coaching and teaching work- all of it.
I have done it without pay and of course as a Professional with pay. You know you love something and your heart is in in when that’s been your path! People who work with me have left great reviews on my website spiritdrivenliving.com for those that might like to see them!
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
I’m really going to answer this question in one short paragraph. It is all about- after your training and ongoing education in a given field, .
Getting the work. Gaining the experience. Doing the work. Developing your own practice.
That is where the hold is. That is where the gold is.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Yes, the 2 year experience of the COVID Pandemic taught me to be resilient in getting work online. I didn’t cut my teeth on computers so it has been a journey going from mostly in person type of work to hybrid -some in person but most online, zoom or the like. .
I still prefer in person because there is something about that connection but I’ve learned to see the many values in working online as well.
