We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Rosegold Shay a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Rosegold , appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I always dreamt of being an artist on big stages as child and as life happened the dream faded. I slowly stepped back into being a creative when I started my crystal business as a hobby. The support was overwhelming and it was a freeing way of self expression. Through crystal meditation and unpacking what halted my childhood dream I was able to regain my confidence in music. The first song I wrote in that process was stuck on a loop in my brain while I was on a call at my 9-5. It was something in the pit of my stomach telling me that I was at a fork in the road and had to make a big decision. The options were to focus 100% on my corporate career and find ways to advance or pour all of my time and energy into what 7 year old Rosegold Shay wanted.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve been into music ever since I can remember. My start began with rapping and playing the drums. Over time I added music production/engineering to the list of interests. I’ve been in the background of the entertainment industry for over a decade doing a range of things like brand management and even being a tv extra. In 2021 I decided to move in front of the lens and share my story with the world in hopes to inspire and educate. What sets me apart from other artists is how vulnerable I’m willing to get for fans. I think all artists are vulnerable by nature but there’s another level that I have no problem crossing. The main thing I want my fans to know about my brand is that everything is intentional. There’s a lot of thought and emotion that goes into every song and product.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey isn’t driving by a singular goal or mission. There’s so many things that keep me going. My song Life’s A Trip tells a story about not knowing where the journey will take you. You may know your end destination but the twists and turns come a long to reroute you. A major lesson I had to learn was to accept the reroute. Being hyper-focused on one goal can make you miss a lot of opportunities that may be even bigger than the one you’re speeding to.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Reading is one of my favorite hobbies to clear my mind. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is my favorite book. I mention it in my song Life’s A Trip but I try not to give too many details so I don’t spoil it. What I can say about the book is that it is a great starting point for anyone who feels lost or doesn’t know where to start in their creative or business endeavors. One message I can share from the book is no one has to understand your journey but you. I think as a society we look too much to our peers and loved ones for validation but we don’t consider that whatever decision we choose is something we have to live with and not them. The Four Agreements is another great read. It helps me navigate better with strangers and friends through undesirable situations that are bound to happen.
